Scripps Ocean Acidification Real-time (SOAR) Monitoring Program is a system designed for the observation of pH levels at Scripps Institution of Oceanography

Ocean Acidification (OA) is the result of a buildup of greenhouse gases -- primarily carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. As these gases accumulate in the atmosphere, they also dissolve in the ocean and increase the acidity of the water. The resulting OA can act like osteoporosis for marine organisms that build shells or have external skeletons such as mussels, oysters, clams, coral, and many others.

Acidifying Seas – Investigating OA impacts in the intertidal zone 06/01/2016

Blog post from one of our collaborators at the National Park Service!

A couple weeks ago the Smith Lab participated in a synchronized water sample collection with the Navy, NOAA, and the National Park Service, collecting samples at locations along coastal San Diego.

The samples will be analyzed to see how water chemistry differs (or not) between coastal zones within a relatively small geographic area.

Happy International Women's Day! Thank you to all women in science who are working to advance knowledge and understanding of our world! Especially as it pertains to the ocean and ocean acidification!

Having fun with GoPro time lapse last week led to this snap shot of us suiting up - for fellow neoprene wearers, I'm sure its very relatable.
