An application sent without conviction costs the same as a serious one. Same fees, same deadlines, same weeks of your life.

Your Step 2 CK and your graduation year are already decided. What is not decided is whether you apply properly, or apply to see how it goes.

The second also leaves you with nothing to learn from, because you never find out whether they turned down you, or an application you did not really send.

Most applicants ask for a letter and then hope for the best.

A letter written from memory is a general letter, and a general letter reads like every other one in the pile.

Before you ask, hand the writer a brag sheet: who you are, and the specific traits you showed while you worked with them. You are not writing it for them. You are making sure the things worth saying are the things that get said.

A reported score is a line you cannot change. Everything else in the application is still moving.

What a program is deciding is whether you will be good to work with and whether you will finish. Your score opens a door. It does not walk through it.

Interviews are not talent, they are reps. Answer, score it, rewrite it, repeat.

The most expensive mistake on a program list is eliminating yourself before the program does.

Most lists get cut late at night, on instinct. The programs that go first are rarely the ones that were never going to read you.

What a program says it prefers and how it has actually behaved are two different documents. Cut on the second one.

Everyone’s asking the same question in the IMG groups right now: where do I put my signals?

Fair question. You get limited signals for the entire cycle and no do-overs. But most of the advice going around is guesswork dressed up as strategy, so here’s what three real programs actually did last season.

Three programs, two of them the same specialty, all in the same region. Three completely different answers. Anyone telling you one rule for where to signal has not looked at the programs.

The question was never whether to signal. It’s where.

Comment SIGNAL and we’ll send you the full Signaling & Geographic Alignment guide.

📌 Note: These are three specific programs, not national averages. All figures come from Program Insider, run against one applicant profile in the 2025 cycle. Your profile will produce different numbers at the same programs.
