πŸ‰ Happy National Watermelon Day! πŸ‰

Did you know watermelon is made up of about 92% water? That makes it one of nature's most refreshing ways to stay hydrated during these warm summer days. It's also packed with vitamin C, vitamin A, and lycopene, an antioxidant that gives watermelon its vibrant red color.

This summer, we were excited to introduce fresh watermelon to our school menus, giving students another delicious way to enjoy seasonal fruit. Even better? Our watermelon is grown right here in California by hardworking farmers in Bakersfield, bringing farm-fresh flavor closer to our cafes!

Language Academy Lunch Staff Member, Serena Tatum, is giving back to her community after being inspired from a personal experience. A few years back, her own daughter built a relationship with a lunch lady at her school that helped her be a better student. Serena was motivated by this story and gives back to her community, being there for students when they need help.

Being a school nutrition professional means working at the intersection of taste, science, and health. It’s a role that requires not only adaptability but heart and dedication. Whether they’re cooking, serving, or connecting with students, they wear many hats, but at the core of it all is a shared purpose: making a difference in a child’s day.

From now to July 31, participating San Diego Unified schools, parks and recreation centers, libraries, military sites, and neighborhood organizations are serving as community meal and nutrition hubs, offering free breakfast and lunch to all children and teens. Meal sites are open Monday through Friday.

We had so much fun celebrating Farm to Summer Week in June that we almost forgot to share the highlights! πŸ˜…πŸ‰β˜€οΈπŸŒ±

This year’s theme, From Seed to Plate: The Story of Our Food, was all about celebrating the journey our food takes from the farm to our plates. and we brought the fun to our community!

We teamed up with the College-Rolando Library for a day full of hands-on fun, including sampling refreshing watermelon agua fresca πŸ‰πŸ₯€ and learning about fresh, local foods.

Summer campers hopped on our Blender Bike πŸš²πŸ’¨ to pedal their way to a delicious creation and took home cucumber and watermelon seeds to plant and grow at home. πŸŒ±πŸ‰πŸ₯’

We loved celebrating fresh food, local agriculture, and the joy of growing something of your own! πŸ’š
