SDSU Mechanical Engineering Department
The Mechanical Engineering department is currently the largest of the four departments in the College of Engineering at SDSU.
The department educates approximately 1300 undergraduate and graduate students. The Program Educational Objectives of the Mechanical Engineering Program at SDSU are to matriculate Bachelor of Science graduates who upon the years following graduation are committed to:

Congratulations to Dr. Sam Kassegne for receiving the Senate Excellence in Teaching Award. For nearly two decades at San Diego State University, Professor Kassegne has demonstrated extraordinary dedication to teaching, mentorship, and educational innovation. He has developed pioneering courses in microfabrication and MEMS technologies, modernized key laboratory experiences for hundreds of engineering students, and consistently receives outstanding evaluations for his engaging and rigorous instruction.

The College of Engineering is celebrating San Diego State University's first-ever grant from the prestigious W.M. Keck Foundation, known for its support for potentially high-impact research.
Led by Dean and Distinguished Professor Eugene Olevsky, along with Wenwu Xu and Elisa Torresani from the SDSU Mechanical Engineering Department, the project will explore the use of powerful electronic pulses to develop new, advanced materials and could have applications for higher precision in materials processing in aerospace, transportation, and manufacturing.

What happens when you hit metal with a billionth-of-a-second burst of energy? SDSU engineers are about to find out. ⚡
The College of Engineering, led by Dean and Distinguished Professor Eugene Olevsky along with Wenwu Xu and Elisa Torresani from , has earned a $1.2 million grant from the W.M. Keck Foundation to explore a bold new method of materials processing using ultra-fast electric pulses.
This is SDSU’s first-ever Keck award and it supports research that could lead to stronger, more resilient materials in fields like aerospace and manufacturing.
