Mental Health Awareness 05/19/2022

Dear San Diego Unified Families,

The stress, isolation, and uncertainty of living through a pandemic has taken a toll on the well-being of many people, including our students, families and staff. San Diego Unified has long been focused on addressing the needs of the whole child, but the challenging circumstances of the past two years has highlighted the importance of providing support and resources to address the mental health concerns of our school community.

On May 10, the Board of Education passed a resolution proudly recognizing May as Mental Health Matters Month, confirming the District’s commitment to this work.

During Mental Health Matters Month, thousands of individuals, organizations, and communities join together to show their support and bring awareness to the topic of mental health. San Diego Unified’s Guide to May is Mental Health Matters Month contains activities and events designed to create awareness and spread the word that mental health is something everyone should care about.

As part of Mental Health Matters Month, schools throughout the District will be participating in the Mental Health Matters Spirit Week - May 23-26, 2022 – complete with dress up themes, mental health messaging, and student activities every day of the week! We encourage all students to participate!

Family members can participate as well using the Family Guide, which accompanies the week of student activities and encourages discussions about what students learned, helping to normalize conversations about mental health.

For additional resources and information regarding mental health awareness, or if you or a loved one is in need of help, please visit sandiegounified.org/about/mental_health_awareness.

Did you know that PLHS will be hosting a free summer class thru SDUSD's Level Up program for 9th-12th graders starting 7/11 thru 7/29 from 1:00 pm until 3:00 p.m.?

Led by Master Teaching Artists, La Jolla Playhouse’s Devised Theatre Camp is an exciting, personalized exploration of community and history through docu-play theatre.

In a new, dedicated partnership with SDUSD, students in grades 6-12 will participate in ensemble-building theatre exercises; explore elements of storytelling and stories from within their own community to understand various perspectives on a single topic; learn performance techniques and how to conduct an informational interview; and edit and revise language to create a focused piece of theatre.

Hi Parents - Please fill out the following questionnaire if your child plans on going back to school in person or if they are staying online. Please submit by March 22nd. If they do not hear back, your child will continue with online school. https://illuminate.online?access_code=SXC4TH4

We plan to continue providing quality online learning for families who choose to have their student(s) remain online and to also provide an Onsite/Online Hybrid model beginning on April 12th. The Onsite portion of the hybrid will provide secondary students with four days of onsite instruction for four hours provided by our classroom teachers. Secondary students will be dismissed after the last class and have access to a grab and go lunch option if necessary. For the remainder of each school day/week, students in the hybrid model will work independently on lessons provided by their teachers. This “asynchronous learning” will be done both online and offline. As soon as we finalize our Onsite/Online Hybrid model, we will provide you with specific details about your child’s schedule.
Our goal is to continue to provide a safe learning environment throughout the entire day for students and offer additional time beyond the instructional day. Additional time beyond the school day may be provided by staff and not necessarily by your child’s teacher. Your input will be necessary to determine the level of additional opportunities that may be provided.
Based on the number of students who choose the Onsite/Online Hybrid model, Dana, Correia, and PLHS may need to decrease the amount of time students spend on campus in order to protect everyone’s health. We will always maintain the highest possible health and safety conditions. In this case, it may be necessary to move to a 2 days on, 2 days off campus model, for students who are receiving their live instruction through the Onsite/Online Hybrid model.

Memo for CIF: From start to finish, the focus has been
on how the organization may serve all student athletes in the best possible way.
A) Two Seasons – Fall and Spring – Specifics of the plan provides for two seasons of sport, which
will serve to maximize the length of each season while not eliminating any athletic opportunities in
a reduced athletic calendar for the year. The adjusted calendar distributes the athletic offerings
into a Fall/Winter Season, and a Spring Season in hope of balancing the opportunities for all
student athletes. We understand this move from three seasons of sport to two will not come
without its challenges. The logistics of facility usage, multi-sport athletes, multi-sport coaches,
a potential shortage of officials are just a few of the challenges we recognize with this modified
calendar and have already begun to explore potential solutions. Extraordinary times call for
extraordinary measures and there is no doubt that is where we are right now.

San Diego CIF Section: A Shared Vision for Education Based Athletics

2 | P a g e
B) Section Championships – The 2020-2021, sports calendar includes full Section Championship
experiences, which means the same number of champions in each sport, the same number of
divisions in each sport, and the same number of guaranteed entries from leagues advancing to the
playoffs in each sport, as in previous years.
C) CIF Regional/State Championships – The CIF State Office has made the decision to streamline
the CIF Regional and CIF State Championships competitions/tournaments to no longer than one
week once our San Diego Section Championships have concluded. More details on format, dates,
etc., will be forthcoming from the CIF State Office.
2. CIF Bylaws 600-605 Suspended for the 2020-2021 School Year – CIF Executive Director, Dr. Ron
Nocetti, has made the decision to enact CIF Bylaw 1108.A, which states, “In emergency situations, the
State CIF President or Executive Director or his/her authorized designee my act for the Federated
Council in the best interests of the organization. The action will be reviewed by the Executive Committee.”
Therefore, a decision has been made that CIF Bylaws 600-605 will be suspended for the 2020-2021,
school year. The thought behind this decision was it would not be a realistic expectation, with the major
adjustments of our sports seasons, that we would still prohibit students from participating in contests for
outside teams during the high school season of sport. The CIFSDS Governance will review this
decision and make a final determination as to which sections of this one-time suspension of
Bylaws 600-605 will be adopted for the 2020-2021 year.

3. Outside Season Activities – As schools open and students return, provided state and local health
authorities deem it safe to do so, schools can begin their pre-season preparations, depending on what is
allowed by health authorities during that time period. Any specific rules pertaining to these pre-season
activities will be determined after the final adoption by the CIFSDS Governance on the one-time
suspension to Bylaws 600-605, more specifically CIFSDS Bylaw 600.2 pertaining to activities
conducted “outside the season of sport”.
4. Approval Process – In collaboration with our Board of Managers, Conference Presidents, Sport
Specific Advisory Committees, and Officials Association, we will be coming together over the next couple
weeks to finalize the dates and schedules for each of the seasons of sport for our section. We understand
that this has been a difficult period for our student athletes, coaches, athletic administrators, and parents
with so much uncertainty and information changing on a daily basis. With an approved CIFSDS Master
Calendar for 2020-2021 in place, we look forward to continuing to collaborate with leaders from across
our section and state as we prepare for the start of the 2020-2021 athletic year.
During these unprecedented times, it is going to require us all to approach our mission of supporting
education-based athletics with a “solution oriented” mindset. We understand the challenges this modified
calendar is going to present. The CIFSDS, its leadership, and governance are committed to offering all of
our current sport opportunities this upcoming school year for our member schools, athletes, parents, and

communities. It will require vision, creativity, flexibility, teamwork, and unwavering commitment from all our
member schools to make this unique schedule a success.
The entire CIFSDS team is ready, willing, and able to assist you in any way we possibly can. Please do not
hesitate to contact us with any questions on the information presented in this memo.
Thank you in advance for your help and support with the implementation of this plan for the CIF San Diego
