The sights, the sounds, the decorative streets and architecture!

Our beloved Executive and Artistic Director, Fiona Chatwin, has been making her way through Portugal as of late, and had the opportunity to take a 27 mile (!) bike ride through the countryside, covering street fairs, art, and some quality port wine.

Many thanks, as always, to the Rose Foundation and Leadership Network SAN DIEGO for making this possible!

Link Up is this weekend! The students have honed their recordsrs and the orchestra is well-rehearsed. Let's go!

This is the second consecutive year Villa has been able to participate in this amazing program, and we're excited to have our students present all tha5 they've learned this year.

Link Up, a program of Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute, pairs orchestras with students in grades 3–5 at schools in their local communities to explore orchestral repertoire through a hands-on music curriculum. Students participating in Link Up attend a culminating concert, in which they sing and play recorder or violin with the orchestra from their seats. Students also compose and perform their own pieces inspired by the orchestral repertoire studied. Since 2003, Carnegie Hall has partnered with local professional, community, and university orchestras to offer Link Up at sites across the United States and around the world. La Jolla Symphony & Chorus and Villa Musica are thrilled to join this outstanding program.

Continuing on her exciting travels through Europe, last week Fiona was in Slovenia!

Cobblestone streets, stone bridges, glacial rivers and a beautiful small island complete with a church in the middle of it, her trip to Ljubljana, Lake Bled and Ojstrica was a fascinating experience.

More adventures to come! You can also follow along with her journeys at sabbaticalmusings.com.

Many thanks to the Clare Rose Foundation and Fieldstone Leadership Network for making this opportunity possible!

Calling all string players! If you're interested in learning a new instrument, or practicing one you've started to learn, we've got some camp options for you:

- String"FUN"damentals, ages 5-8, June 24-28, for young musicians just starting to learn violin

- String Zing, ages 8-12, July 15-19, for young musicians with at least 1 year of experience playing a string instrument

- Bass Clef Half-Day Camp, grades 7-9, for middle school aged musicians with at least 1 year of experience

- Switcheroo Strings Half-Day Camp, grades 7-9, for middle school aged musicians interested in trying out a new string instrument

We've got lots of options to choose from, and when kids are exposed to music, it gives them something to practice at home which keeps them busy for the summer and beyond while fostering creative expression.

Which one looks good to you?

Introducing....

Alex Oliver!

Meet the newest member of our piano faculty! Alex comes to us from Santa Cruz, where he formerly attended UC Santa Cruz, and has 9 years of teaching experience under his belt. He's taught private lessons, and also spent 2 years teaching for Everyone's Music School in Santa Cruz.

Alex also has experience playing violin, and loves challenging himself with difficult piano repertoire. He believes that the best way to foster a lifelong love of music for his students is to give them the opportunity to explore and learn more about the music they enjoy listening to.

Welcome, Alex! He is currently accepting new students.

Calling all young string players!

Our String "FUN"damentals summer camp is for kids who are interested in playing a stringed instrument and don't have any playing experience as of yet. Campers will get the chance to try their hand at playing violin and learning to read music, without subjecting their parents to the initial screeches of un-resined bows on unfamiliar strings while they get used to their new instrument. For a week, at least.

Campers will also have the chance to participate in singing, art, and movement! Lunches are provided and access to the La Jolla Country Day School playground is also a part of each day.

Reserve your spot today! https://villamusica.org/product/summer-2024-string-fun-camp/

Where in the world is Fiona now?

Our beloved ED is on a once-in-a-lifetime sabbatical through the Clare Rose Foundation and Fieldstone Leadership Network, and is spending it exploring Europe. The second stop for her was Italy, where she's visited Genoa, the Cinque Terre (5 Cities) region, and Venice.

We'll continue to post highlights from her trip, and feel free to follow along with her travels on her blog, sabbaticalmusings.com

Do you have a young string player in your life who wants to take their playing to the next level? Are you still in the works with nailing down your summer camp options this year? Then we have the camp for you!

During this full-day camp, campers will have the chance to improve their playing skills both individually and in groups, and will also have the opportunity to participate in movement, singing, and art activities.

All full-day camps are held at La Jolla Country Day School.

Our new Musical Biographies facilitators got together last week for training so that they can continue to provide valuable programming to seniors in our community who have memory issues.

Facilitators are trained not only on the program materials, but also trained how to guide memory-affected adults, and their caretakers, through activities that can help preserve the memory of milestones from their lives, and the result is a beautiful memory book, complete with the soundtracks from their lives.

As International Women's Day comes to a close, we wanted to highlight some, potentially, lesser-known Women of Music, who were successful in their own rights, even if not as well known as their male counterparts.

Happy to the talented, smart, and fantastic women who support Villa Musica, our musicians, and each other.

Slide 1: Clara Schumann
Born in 1819, Clara Schumann was a German pianist, composer, and music teacher. Considered a child prodigy, she started touring at age 11 throughout Europe and enjoyed a successful professional career as a touring pianist. In her later years, she became the first female faculty member of Dr. Hoch's Konservatorium, music conservatory, in Frankfurt, Germany. Renowned composer and performer, Robert Schumann, was her husband, and together they had 8 children, many of whom also grew up to be musicians.

Slide 2: F***y Mendelssohn
Also an early German composer and pianist, we present F***y Mendelssohn. She composed more than 125 piano pieces and over 250 lieder, although most were not published during her lifetime. Due to social conventions of the day, F***y had to allow her younger brother, Felix Mendelssohn, to enjoy composer credits for 6 of her pieces, which were credited in his Opus 8 and 9.

Slide 3: Nadia Boulanger
Nadia Boulanger was a French composer and music teacher, born in 1887. She studied at the Paris Conservatoire, following in her father's footsteps, and studied with Gabriel Faure, among others. In her 20s, Ms. Boulanger was invited to join the faculty at the Conservatoire, and when the French Music School for Americans opened in 1921 in Fountainebleau, she was offered one of the first faculty spots as the Professor of Harmony. Her students included Aaron Copland, Philip Glass, and Quincy Jones to name a few.

Slide 4: Marilyn Bergman
Marilyn Bergman was the first female composer to win an Oscar for her music, and did so along with her husband, composer Alan Bergman. Marilyn and Alan were a Hollywood's music-writing powerhouse, and worked on music for films starring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and later composed music with Marvin Hamlisch and Barbra Streisand.
