To study genres is not to divide literature into boxes, but to discover the countless ways humanity has chosen to tell its story.

Literature is traditionally divided into five major genres:

✦ Poetry — where emotions become music through lyric, sonnet, ode, elegy, ballad, and epic.

✦ Drama — where humanity takes the stage through comedy and tragedy, from witty comedies of manners to heroic and revenge tragedies.

✦ Fiction — where imagination shapes reality in romances, short stories, and novels, embracing Gothic tales, epistolary narratives, regional fiction, and picaresque adventures.

✦ Non-fiction — where lived experience speaks through essays, biographies, autobiographies, pamphlets, and travel writing.

✦ Literary Criticism — where literature reflects upon itself through feminist, postcolonial, Marxist, psychoanalytic, archetypal, structuralist, stylistic, and reader-response approaches.

The more we explore these genres, the more we realise that literature has never been merely about books. It is about memory becoming poetry, conflict becoming drama, imagination becoming fiction, experience becoming history, and thought becoming criticism.

Every masterpiece you read is not simply a story—it is a conversation with centuries of writers asking the same enduring questions:

Who are we? Why do we love? Why do we suffer? And how should we live?
