Major congratulations to our FIRST Robotics team, the Patribots (4738), who traveled to Houston to compete in the FIRST World Championships this past weekend. We were the only team from San Diego Unified to travel to Worlds and our team was amazing.
We placed 4th out of 78 teams in our division during the qualifying round and were the 3rd Alliance Captains, for which our kids did some impressive scouting and strategy work. We advanced all the way to the semi-finals, the 2nd furthest any San Diego team has ever made it in the FIRST Championships! Our robot is ranked 60th in the world out of 3286 robots –AND– we won the prestigious Imagery Award for our field.
Shout out to Ms. Van Loan, Mr. Espinoza, our fantastic parents and mentors and the following phenomenal kids: Adam, Aidan, Alexander, Andrew, Benjamin, Emery, Emiliano, Emily, Gavin, Gus, Hadizah, Hollis, Jacob, Jeremy, Kyle, Mark, Noelle, Odin, Omar, Raquel, Ray, Rudy, Sean, Sky, Thadeus, Timothy, Travis, Ty and Will! And a huge thank you to our sponsors who make it happen! Qualcomm, DODSTEM, Natural Networks, Gene Haas Foundation, Solar Turbines, San Diego Unified CCTE, and Patrick Henry High School Foundation.

Our congratulations to Coach for her recognition award! Coach Toni has been a volunteer coach/mentor for multiple levels of the FIRST robotics community (FLL Explore, FLL Challenge, and FTC), on both school and community teams, for kids ranging in age from 8-16 since 2017!
She is currently the coach of FLL team Mechanical Meatloaf (w/a side of pickles) and a co-coach for FTC team the Dapper Robonoodles !
A typical "season" goes from August to April or May, during which time she probably easily commits 10-15 hours per week (sometimes much more!) between the two teams. But in addition to that she has also become a respected and sought after judge at FLL events, and is passionate about developing and highlighting the FLL Explore program for younger kids locally, to help encourage those with burgeoning interests in STEM. Her have-fun-while-learning philosophy has impacted more than 200 teams this year.
Toni truly exemplifies the Core Values of FIRST by making a real impact in her community and with her teams. She is enthusiastic, kind, and encouraging - nurturing innate curiosity and sense of discovery, and sharing her own love of learning. As a founding member of the Mission Trails Robotics Community, she is a truly gracious professional who has supported many other teams by sharing best practices, helping navigate coaching challenges, and sharing resources when possible. The teamwork she shows among our community of coaches and mentors sets a fantastic example for all.
On behalf of the many kids, families, and fellow volunteers you have worked with, Toni, we thank you for all that you have done and continue to do.
We LOVE you, Toni!
