There's no doubt that each family has a different story of how they keep up with the language, but this one definitely hits home, as I often work with students who grew up speaking minimal Latvian. This interview is mainly in English and could work well for those who are not (yet) fluent in Latvian.

Wow, time truly flies!
Working extra hard this month before I leave to Latvia. I have yet to figure out an assignment for my students during the month of June. I'll be ready to start back up on July 6th.🤩

Had a chance to speak about passing on Latvian language to my children, and the power of small daily habits. Thanks to Inga Sindi and podcast . Check out more episodes and get inspired from other families with similar stories.

I’ve been putting a lot of care into guiding my students through their language learning, and it’s been amazing to watch their progress. Most of my students are currently around A2 to B1 level, while some who have joined more recently started with very little knowledge and are steadily working toward A1.

The early lessons are more theory-heavy, but I gradually introduce small challenges, encouraging them to form simple sentences on their own.

As they continue, their thinking in Latvian becomes more natural and nuanced, and their questions reflect a deeper understanding. Watching that growth unfold shows me that my approach as a teacher is working.

Here are a few tips to help students stay on a successful learning path:

- Don’t skip lessons — consistency makes a real difference.
- Even one sentence a day can go a long way.
- Look for opportunities to think in Latvian throughout your day: notice a number and say it in Latvian, realize it’s Friday and name the day — actively apply whatever you’re currently learning.
- Complete homework regularly to reinforce new material.
- Take time to review and learn new vocabulary from each lesson.
- Revisit noun, verb, and adjective endings from time to time, including both indefinite and definite forms, to keep your foundation strong.

Above all, enjoy learning Latvian and exploring its many subtle nuances along the way. :)

One of the most rewarding moments I’ve had recently came from a student who started learning Latvian to reconnect with her roots.

Just a week later, she signed up her mom as well. Her mom grew up speaking only conversational Latvian and, after living here for many years, has lost it.

But the story doesn’t end there—the grandmother is the only one who has maintained a strong level of Latvian throughout her life in the U.S.

So now, my mission as a tutor is to help bring these three generations together through the language. If that’s not what this work is all about, I’m not sure what is.
