Saxophone players, feel accomplished before your week even starts! Join me for free every Sunday in April for Sunday Practice, where I'll teach on a weekly saxophone topic, help you plan your practice session, and then give you 20-30 mins of individual practice time. We'll close out with a breathing exercise to both build lung capacity and bring more calm into your upcoming week.

It can be hard to quiet the mind, but that space and silence is so important for our well-being. One of the many tools that learning an instrument offers us is approaching musical practice as active meditation. That is, focusing on a repetitive pattern, awareness of touch and of the body, and staying grounded in the present moment.

Tonight I was reminded of the beauty of community, and enjoying music with others. And the beauty of safe spaces, in this case - a safe creative space where we each felt free to experiment. I had sooo much fun tonight making music with this great music buddy. We played a couple of classical pieces for piano and saxophone (the Bozza Aria and Light of Sothis), and then we spent the rest of the time improvising and playing with some really beautiful, ethereal-sounding chords.

When you're learning something new, what should you focus on first?
1. Playing the correct notes - practicing wrong notes builds wrong habits. Slow it down so that you don't miss any notes.
2. Use the correct articulation, like staccato or accents. Like step one, this also helps build correct muscle memory.
3. Stay relaxed and keep your fingers close to the keys. Especially focus on relaxed shoulders.

If you want to learn a new song, learning by ear is a great option because it helps you get to know the song much better (versus just reading sheet music, tabs, etc.) and helps improve your ear-training skills. Improved ear training skills will allow you to learn songs and solos more quickly.
