Meet our new high school intern, Jana! She has been supporting Ramya this past week in her research and assisting the lab where it is needed.

“Hi everyone! My name is Jana Impreso. I am a senior at High Tech High Mesa and will pursue Civil Engineering at SDSU this fall semester. In the future, I plan to focus on the environmental branch of CE, particularly developing and designing water/filtration systems that help our communities and environments here in San Diego. In my free time, I love to do arts and crafts like painting and crocheting, playing volleyball, hanging out with my family, and cooking! I’m so grateful and excited for this opportunity to learn more about hydrology and meet new people at SDSU!”

Dr. Brittany Barreto joined DHL last summer, apologies for the delayed introduction! Her previous research at UC Merced focused broadly on water quality, and studying the impacts of climate change and wildfire on harmful algal blooms through remote sensing. At DHL, her research has expanded to examining water supplies across the US under wildfire risk. 🔥💧🔥💧

We are so happy to have Brittany be a part of DHL, follow us for updates on her work!

Brittany presented her work "Remote Sensing of Cyanobacteria in California Lakes and Reservoirs: Impacts and Implications of Wildfire" at the Postdoc showcase last Friday!

Her presentation looked at how wildfires significantly impact water quality by indirectly influencing increased nutrient transport and the promotion of harmful algal blooms (HABs). Her study examines the effect of wildfires on cyanobacteria harmful algal blooms (cyanoHABs) in 68 California lakes using satellite remote sensing (SRS) data from 2008 to 2022.

Congratulations to our DHL undergrads who presented at S3!!

• Mya and Camryn provided insights on trash types in the San Diego watershed 🗑️🌊🗑️
• Shruti presented on the non-native vegetation effects on fires 🔥🌴🔥
• Dalston presented on the impacts of wildfires on water supply and infrastructure in the Western US 💧🔥💧

What an incredible week! had the privilege of being part of WEFTEC’s InFLOW 2024 scholars cohort, where she was able to connect with so many brilliant professionals in the water industry. Being surrounded by such a diverse and passionate group of people, who openly shared their knowledge, culture, and enthusiasm, was an unforgettable experience. We can’t wait to see the amazing things these individuals will accomplish in the water industry.
