A San Diego Hybrid Home School Mom. This FB page + my IG @hybridschoolmom is to share some of what we do and what is available to you in San Diego.
Book me to speak with you on all your homeschooling options in San Diego County. Let’s learn together! I have been directing and coordinating my children's education for 12 years (more if you count the years before school age) but it was not until this past year I have been sharing and answering more questions about how I've schooled my children at home, with a co-op, and with charters in San Die
go, particularly hybrid charters (that require some schooling at home and some on campus. Through my continued participation in local homeschool groups on and offline, I've learned and continue to learn a lot. I love to share and pay the information forward. I have shared a bit on my preexisting YT Channel at https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLTO5FBVZ8vkIxQ1Ow_b0gCloVKignS-eD) but almost all of it is within private Facebook groups. My hope with this page is to be viewable and accessible to those wanting to school as I have, share what I know that can help you, and my attempt to have one wall to share what I think is good-to-know information as well as answer the most common questions of our alternative education path that is referred to as Hybrid Homeschooling or Eclectic Homeschooling. My children (now a highschooler, a middleschooler, a gradeschooler, and a preschooler) have different needs and learning styles. In the very beginning, I considered myself as a Classical Education homeschooler and still do but as the years went on, we have became more eclectic as we go deep in the sciences and learning an instrument (a big component of a classical education) has never been a financially feasible thing for our family despite the desires to learn the cello, piano, and other instruments. Many things are learned on the path, through trial and error and by hindsight. All through it all, we've always done the best we can with what we know and what we have. That is pretty much all you can do. We continue to learn something new every; so many new things and many changes to old things. Note that there is no real right or wrong way to homeschool. I am only one of millions of families going about this journey. Sharing my homeschooling life is to share to give you ideas, not make you feel less or more as a homeschooling mother or parent. Some people school real fancy and have lots of funds (personal banks accounts or from their chosen charter) for experiences and some do not use paper in educating their own while some do a lot of books, formal curriculum, and writing mat home. In the end, what works for you and your child is what is good for you, and you know it is good for you when you have a whole and happy child - and not just an academic excelling child in your eyes. No one is wrong in how to homeschool but if there were to be a wrong, it would be when the parent or child are in tears, not wanting to do school together, not connecting, and ultimately not learning. There are many tips in how to overcome such struggles if one wants to continue on the path. Some come to the conclusion that schooling their child is not for them and that is totally OK too. I am not outright against the traditional public school system nor will you find bashing of them here so that I feel better about the path I have chosen for my own. I believe that all school can serve a child and parent best if it is a fit for them in the values and education it provides. Even in the not so great schools, one can find some good and despite its shortcomings, for some, the neighborhood school is a place of solitude not found in the home. Someone will always argue one way to school or homeschool is better or not, while not considering the child or the home, just like there are those that will argue how to get into college and not consider the specific college or student. Regardless, homeschooling is what you make of it and whatever it is you make of it, may your children and your students' needs be the center of it all (and not just the parents). May our children always know that they are individually loved, unique, and that their value is not based on their academic output or performance for us but based on their efforts for themselves and them alone and no matter what, they exist as a beloved child of yours. May they always know the value of their life in our home as our student and as our child and no academic low or high can ever take away from that. I am here to let you pick my brain apart and answer your questions about the many ways to school in San Diego. Whether you are thinking of being a PSA family, a public schooling family, work with a charter school or thinking of hybrid schooling, or do not know which path to go yet, I can help with that. As I've said, I have been schooling my kids with a hodgepodge of everything. I do not work for any company or funded to speak on the behalf of any school and have nothing to sell. My internal drive and satisfaction are happy families and ultimately happy and learning kids. When people are happy, learning just comes natural. I have been in this sphere for over 12 years and my hope is to pass on whats been passed to me by those who have traveled it before and that you find for you what fits you. I believe that every child should be able to learn in the space that is best for them - home or otherwise. Happy Homeschooling,
Jenn

Q: What hybrid brick a mortar schools do you have experience with and why brick and mortar?
A:
TL:DR The hybrid school gives me the room to go above and beyond on home days. They cover the grade level basics + things beyond my abilities (chess, robotics, swim, AP courses, marching band, etc in highschool) that I don’t have the ability or bandwidth for. When they’re with me, I build on top of what they’ve provided.
I have personal experience with several campuses of the Classical Academies serving all stages of schooling from elementary, middle, and high schools, Community Montessori, Dimensions Collaborative, Heritage Flex Academy, and Escondido Charter’s Flex Highschool.
They all have different flavors and several tracks under one school, giving families options to serve the different learning styles and needs of students, teaching preferences of parents, and the interests of all parties on and off campus.
California Charters are all tuition-free publicly funded public schools under the independent study branch of schooling with having some flexibility for the families they serve. Some of the above give zero flexibility but was a good fit for a child for a season.
They all provide the basics such as curriculum and access to state standards and guidance but each differ in how they operate and deliver it. What’s best for my child or family may not be the best for your child and you.
There is flexibility at most when parents take charge. They cannot stop you from going “ahead” or doing something different in your home. What I’ve seen schools do is push back when parents are asking classroom teachers to meet the needs of their advanced child in their classroom while they have to tend to a class that is not like their one child.
I have had such child (or several) but even so, I remain as a hybrid schooler with a brick and mortar, doing the advanced and above grade level work at home and taking core and elective courses on campus I do not have the knowledge or bandwidth for such us CAD and 3D printing or project based classes better done with peers such as introduction to robotics.
In the higher grades, my kids are able to take part in the school’s band and activities that no other charters have. My kids enjoy the consistency of seeing the same friends and teachers. I don’t need to initiate as many playdates or socializing every week when playing with friends is already built in while on campus. Even so, not being tied to a campus for 5 days gives us the time to host field trips or have the room to do what we want to do.
Many times, there is little difference in doing core school work at a hybrid campus vs vendor learning centers as they also tend to cater by grade levels. I would even argue that the quality of core instruction is better at brick and mortar hybrid schools as teachers from grade to grade are familiar with their school’s offerings whereas vendors can vary greatly from one level to the next or from each other. I also refuse some vendors out there as they have lost kids and other reasons.
You can customize whichever hybrid school you go to. It is easier at some more than others. It will take more effort on the parent’s part wherever you go but that’s what homeschooling is: customizing your way of schooling to fit the child and the parent educator and making it work your way. It may be hybrid or it may be something else.
For many, PCA’s flexibility to choose their third-party vendors and use provided funds for ordering is the way and for others, it’s hybrid charters.

I enjoy helping families figure out what homeschooling paths are a best fit for them. I do not profess my way is the best for all nor talk down and push one thing. Those who do that may be trying to sell you something. I merely state what I’ve choose for me and my family and why.
