Dear Family, Friends, & Community,
We share with heavy hearts the loss of Frida Pineda Alvear, founding board member of the Pilipina/o/x Alumni Council at UC San Diego, on April 10, 2024, after an almost 2 year fiercely fought battle with breast cancer.
In her words, "In Summer 2022, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Hormone-positive Breast Cancer and went through the most aggressive treatment. January 2024, I found out incidentally that my cancer decided to mutate (as cancer does) and flip to Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC), an aggressive form of breast cancer." (March 2024) Ultimately, the cancer spread to additional parts of Frida's body. She fought each stage with the utmost strength and bravery all while continuing to choose and experience joy and love with her loved ones.
Frida was a lifelong San Diego native who worked on strengthening the various communities she was a part of, including her own children's school community, her fellow breasties (those with similar diagnoses as herself), at UCSD and Morse High School, in her childhood neighborhood of Paradise Hills, and was involved in numerous interest groups, including baby wearing and plant groups.
To know Frida was to love Frida. Her passing has made an immeasurable impact on her family, friends, and community. She was a beloved partner to her husband Carlo, mama to 3 beautiful young children Kayla, 10, Ethan, 8, and Derek, 5. Frida openly shared her cancer journey to help inspire, advocate, support, comfort, and educate. Even on her hardest days, Frida was the epitome of selflessness as she never stopped caring and fighting for others.
