The Center for Latin American Studies at San Diego State University has been providing educational opportunities since 1942 and is renowned for our program offerings in the indigenous languages of Mexico. We offer multidisciplinary undergraduate and graduate programs in Latin American studies including many concurrent graduate degree programs in professional studies.

Please join us at Scripps Cottage on Tuesday, 4/7, for a guest lecture followed by Q&A with Dr. Lorraine Bayard de Volo from the University of Colorado-Boulder! Dr. Bayard de Volo’s areas of interest include gender as it interacts with and informs war, revolution, political violence, and social movements. Her regional area of specialization is Latin America, and she has done fieldwork in Cuba, Colombia, Mexico (Chiapas), and most particularly Nicaragua.
She is the author of Mothers of Heroes and Martyrs: Gender Identity Politics in Nicaragua, 1979-1999 (Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press) as well as articles in journals, including Comparative Politics, Gender & Society, Social Politics, International Feminist Journal of Politics, Mobilizations, and PS: Political Science and Politics.
Her current research is based upon grants she received from the National Science Foundation and the United States Institute of Peace. She is currently working on a comparative research project on women, war, and peace processes in Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, and Nicaragua. Her first planned major publication out of this research will be a book on gender and the Cuban revolution.

The Tinker Field Research grant is fast approaching!! The deadline is March 17th at 11:59pm! The Tinker Field Research Grants fund the travel and partial logistical costs of graduate students who will be doing preliminary research in Latin America. The objective of this grant is to provide students with the opportunity to immerse themselves in their perspective fields and attain language knowledge, cultural background, initiate research contacts, network with institutions and possible informants and/or research projects, and gather preliminary research data.
