"Play is the work of the child," is a concept popularized by educator Maria Montessori and psychologist Jean Piaget, and highlights the importance of play in children's development. Not only is play fun, it is also the primary way children learn, understand the world around them, and develop physical, cognitive, and social-emotional skills.

Our vibrant parent-participation cooperative preschool community provides a hands-on, developmentally appropriate learning environment for children ages 16 months to 5 yrs old. Learning to write does not come from premature worksheets or an overemphasis on fine motor activities.

The reality is, writing is a full-body developmental process.

Before children can effectively control a pencil, they need a strong foundation of core strength, shoulder stability, arm strength, wrist stability, hand strength, finger dexterity, bilateral coordination, crossing the midline, postural control, motor planning, endurance, and visual motor integration. These skills don't develop separately. They develop together.

And they develop best through movement.

Climbing. Crawling. Hanging. Swinging. Running. Jumping. Carrying. Digging. Throwing. Rolling. Pushing. Pulling. Building...

Hours and years of uninterrupted, child-led play.

Adults, please stop getting in the way of the very experiences children's bodies are designed to seek. Those urges to move, crash, spin, hang, balance, and explore aren't random. They are evolutionary and intentional. They are helping organize the brain and body exactly as nature intended.

Writing is simply one of the many outcomes.

The same experiences that prepare children to write are also building coordination, balance, body awareness, executive functioning, attention, resilience, confidence, and the neurological foundation for later learning.

We cannot continue expecting children to master increasingly refined skills while taking away the very experiences that develop them.

Nature has been getting this right long before worksheets ever existed.

Please don't overcomplicate it. While well-intentioned, many of today's pressures and activities are actually getting in the way.

Trust the sequence.

Trust the children.

Now enrolling for Fall 2026! We are located opposite Burton Park in the City of San Carlos

During the school year, and every month, our preschool offers themes and props that reflect the changing seasons and provide new opportunities for exploration. We begin the fall by celebrating families, and as the weather cools down, we dive into the wonders of winter—such as water, snow, and ice - along with learning about the various holidays of the season. In February, we focus on the importance of friendship and being a caring, engaged member of our school and greater community. As spring arrives, we get excited about exploring our planet, learning about food, and the joys of planting and caring for our environment.

Through hands-on play, children engage with these life themes while developing essential skills like self-reliance, problem-solving, emotional awareness, and both physical and emotional safety.

We are a cooperative preschool, which means that children benefit from having many wonderful adult role models every day. The teacher and adult volunteers in our learning environment work to create safe spaces, facilitate problem-solving, and support children's learning and growth.

Designed for children through 5 years of age, our spaces and routine allow children to interact with a variety of manipulatives and materials at their own speed and throughout the morning, expressing their ideas and creativity while asking questions that encourage further exploration. Our goal is to foster a lifelong love of learning.

Our school offers many resources for comfort, adventure, creativity, and challenge. We also seriously support parents of young children.
