Does every student deserve individual corrections? Fran doesn’t think so.

His answer? Attention in class should be earned, not handed out evenly just for showing up. He compares it to expecting a trophy for participation, and says that’s not how the ballet world works, or most of the working world either.

What does it take to move up through Ballet West Academy, from the professional training division into the trainee program and toward the company? We sat down with Adam Sklute, artistic director of Ballet West, and Evelyn Cisneros-Legate, who runs Ballet West Academy, to find out.

We discussed how dancers move from the professional training division into the trainee program, how the trainee program works, and how the school handles honest conversations with dancers about where they stand before contract decisions are made. Then we tackle an issue that needs to be talked about more: the gap between postgraduate dancers and available contracts and why the industry needs to rethink what counts as success at that stage.
