JKA NorCal’s Fall Camp featuring Sensei Yuko Hirayama is just around the corner! We were honored to interview Sensei to get her perspectives on karate, instruction, and lifelong learning (among many other things). We’d like to highlight some key excerpts that stood out as our favorites. Special thanks to Yoko Ishida and Katie Chen (JKA Santa Monica) for translation, organizing, and sitting down with Sensei Hirayama.

Over the 4th of July weekend, a small group of competitors flew to Ft. Lauderdale, FL to participate in AAU Nationals. Over the span of a week, we competed in open kata, style-specific kata, ippon kumite, and sanbon kumite. It’s always an eye-opening experience to see representatives from all karate styles gathered at one competition!

We’re excited to come back and train even harder after seeing the athleticism and intensity throughout the competition! We were also glad to see friends from other JKA/AF dojos at the event. Having everyone supporting one another and cheering ringside brought a great morale boost to the team. We hope to see everyone again soon!

JKA NorCal is thrilled to be welcoming Sensei Yuko Hirayama (7th Dan, JKA HQ) back to the Bay Area in September for our Fall Training Camp! We had such an amazing series of classes last year, and we're excited to rekindle the collaborative and light-hearted atmosphere.

In addition to last year's itinerary, this year we're adding a concurrent judging and competitor's seminar! Afterwards, the two groups will come back together to put on a low-stakes competition clinic. This allows participants to reinforce the skills they've just reviewed, whether it be by performing kata, engaging in kumite matches, or judging with live feedback from Sensei Hirayama.

Save the date! JKA NorCal is excited to announce that Sensei Yuko Hirayama (7th Dan, JKA HQ) will be returning to the San Francisco Bay Area on September 11–13th. We had an amazing turnout last year, and we’re so honored to learn from Sensei for the second year in a row. More details for the camp to come in the following weeks!

Calling all NorCal members! We’ll be hosting our all-dojo training on Friday, May 1st at 6-7pm followed by a casual potluck. This class will be open to all current and past students, regardless of age or skill level!
