Many parents are allowing access to the internet for young children without an appreciation for the potential harm that can occur, without the necessary safeguards in place. The ICAC wants to educate parents about sexting, cyber-bullying and human trafficking, and give parents some tools to assist them in addressing/monitoring these situations. They will be hosting a Public Education Forum, with no admission charge in October. We want to give this notice as wide a distribution as possible and are enlisting your support.
The white man who initiated the neighborhood chase that ended with the fatal shooting of Ahmaud Arbery was sentenced Monday to life in prison for committing a federal hate crime.

A U.S. District Court judge sentenced Greg McMichael, 66, in the Georgia city of Brunswick. Given that he was previously sentenced to life without parole in a state court for Arbery’s murder, the hate crime penalty is largely symbolic.

A federal jury in February convicted McMichael, his son Travis McMichael, and neighbor William “Roddie” Bryan of violating Arbery’s civil rights, concluding they targeted him because he was Black. All three were also found guilty of attempted kidnapping, and the McMichaels were convicted of using guns in the commission of a violent crime.

The McMichaels armed themselves with guns and used a pickup truck to chase Arbery after the 25-year-old ran past their home on Feb. 23, 2020. Bryan joined the pursuit in his own truck and recorded cellphone video of McMichael blasting Arbery with a shotgun.

The McMichaels told police they suspected Arbery was a burglar. Investigators determined he was unarmed and had committed no crimes.

Ralph Yarl forgot his phone. His parents had asked the 16-year-old to pick up his little brothers at their friend's house on Thursday night, so he headed to the address he thought they'd given him. When the honor student arrived, he pulled in the driveway and walked up to the front door to get his younger twin brothers. The boy described as "well-mannered" and a "kind soul" rang the bell. He had no idea he had gone to the wrong house. He was then shot in front of the residence by the homeowner.

Now the teen, who is a section leader in his high school band and has dreams of attending Texas A&M University to study chemical engineering., is fighting for his life.
