Quite a day flying with my old soaring friend, Scott Lance. We didnβt expect much when we launched, but it turned into an exceptional flight, Grob 103 II, 12,000 feet, 2.5 hours, and an 85-mile triangle.
We departed Hemet and nearly had to land right after release. A low save got us back up to 8,000 feet as we pushed toward the south ridge and Mt. San Jacinto, but we had to turn back after losing altitude. Then a few well-timed cuβs began to form, giving us another chance.
On the second attempt, everything came together. We passed Banning Airport with Palm Springs in view, glided past the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway(we waived to hikers on Mt. San Jacinto) returned toward Hemet, then continued past French Valley and nearly to Lake Elsinore before making a clean dead-stick landing back at Hemet.
A memorable day in the air. Scott, you are an outstanding pilot.

Soaring is where the noise of the world falls away and in the quiet and invisible there is peace.

Safety Tip Tuesday
Last week we featured a poster from the Soaring Safety Foundation: https://www.soaringsafety.org/
One of the comments noted that it was very difficult to read the text and view the graphic at the bottom. Here is the expanded version showing the recommended standard american soaring "In Air" signals.

Safety Tip Tuesday
The Rudder Waggle Signal.
This signal is used by a tow pilot to signal that something is wrong with the glider. The typical problem is the spoilers are open and the climb rate is terrible.
Remember: close the spoilers, don't release!
