Did you know that the month of August is "Purple Ribbon" month? The purple ribbon is used for Pancreatic Cancer awareness, but it is also a symbol that honors children who have lost their lives in and around cars in preventable accidents. 23 children have died this year of heatstroke by being left alone in cars. The purple ribbon campaign began in memory of a six-month old little girl who died after being left alone in a parked car for more than two hours. On a hot day, the temperature inside a parked car can reach as high as 140 to 150 degrees fahrenheit. Please remember to never leave a child alone in or around a vehicle. This precaution can save the life of a child. For other child related safety tips, please visit www.safekids.org.

Today's Parent Engagement Tip: Find out how your child's life at school is going by asking questions that elicit more than one-word answers. Here are a few questions that can spark some good conversations:

1. Can you show me something you learned (or did) today?

2. Who did you play with today? What did you play?

3. What was the hardest thing you had to do today?

4. Tell me what was the best part of your day?

5. Did your teacher or classmates do anything funny?

These may sound like simple questions, but communicating with your child is an important parenting skill. Good communication is the key to building self-esteem as well as a mutual respect. Remember to put away your devices when you are communicating so there are no distractions. Enjoy!!!

Here's today Parent Engagement tip: Bridging the divide between what is learned in the classroom to how it is relevant in day-to-day life is a critical role for parents. Now that you have introduced yourself to the teacher, ask what is being taught in the classroom this week. Take what is being taught and find some engaging ways at home, while cooking or shopping, walking to the park, or any activity that can engage you and your child in a conversation about relevant topics around the lessons being learned in the classroom. The more parents are engaged into our schools, the more widely we can engage the talents and interests of our our children. Be the missing piece to "bridging the gap" between home and school!! Good luck and Happy Friday!!!

Part of making relationships is to know the name of your child's teacher. If you know the name of your child's teacher, hit "like". If you feel comfortable, give your child's teacher a "shout out" in our comments section.

Studies show that early literacy tends to foster healthy brain development, The earlier kids learn to read, the better they will do in other subjects. We encourage that you read with your students at least 20 minutes an evening. Before your students go to bed, have the daily practice of “book cuddling” during bed time. It's a great time for sharing a story together.
