The San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD) is proud to announce that Ana Applegate, Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services, has been recognized by the California Association for Bilingual Education (CABE) with a prestigious award for her outstanding contributions to bilingual education and student success.

Applegate, a San Bernardino native and longtime advocate for multilingual learners, has been instrumental in advancing SBCUSD’s commitment to equity and language access. A former teacher and principal, under her leadership, the District has expanded bilingual programs, strengthened English learner supports and promoted initiatives that celebrate linguistic and cultural diversity.

Today Indian Springs High School hosted the Anderson Olympics, named for Anderson School, which launched this special event many years ago. The annual event brings together students from Arroyo Valley, Cajon, Indian Springs, Pacific, San Bernardino and San Gorgonio High Schools, along with Anderson School. Students spend the day enjoying adaptive outdoor sports in a friendly and supportive environment.

The San Bernardino City Unified School District’s third annual Natural Hair Day, held at CSUSB’s Santos Manuel Student Union North, celebrated the rich history and cultural significance of natural hairstyles worn by African American women.

Natural Hair Day brought together parents, students and community members for a day of festivities on March 1, which included music, dancing, poetry, artwork and a hair-fashion show, all designed to honor the beauty and history of natural hair.

The event also highlighted the passing of the Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair (CROWN) Act, a legislation that prohibits discrimination based on hair texture and protective hairstyles in schools and the workplace.

The celebration included a panel discussion featuring hair care professionals and speakers, who shared insights on the importance of self-expression and self-confidence. Beauty and barber professionals were on hand to offer their expertise and showcase their products, while food vendors provided meals for guests.

El tercer Día del Cabello Natural del Distrito Escolar Unificado de la Ciudad de San Bernardino, celebrado en la Unión Estudiantil Santos Manuel Norte de la CSUSB, celebró la rica historia y la importancia cultural de los peinados naturales que lucen las mujeres afroamericanas.

El Día del Cabello Natural reunió a padres, estudiantes y miembros de la comunidad el 1 de marzo en un día festivo que incluyó música, baile, poesía, obras de arte y un desfile de moda, todo diseñado para honrar la belleza y la historia del cabello natural.

El evento también destacó la aprobación de la Ley para la Creación de un Mundo Respetuoso y Abierto para el Cabello Natural (CROWN), una legislación que prohíbe la discriminación basada en la textura del cabello y los peinados protectores en las escuelas y el ámbito laboral.

La celebración incluyó una mesa redonda con profesionales del cuidado del cabello y ponentes, quienes compartieron ideas sobre la importancia de la autoexpresión y la confianza en uno mismo. Profesionales de la belleza y la peluquería estuvieron presentes para ofrecer su experiencia y presentar sus productos, mientras que vendedores de comida ofrecieron comidas a los invitados.
