What’s New With California Assembly Bill 5?
California’s Assembly Bill 5 requires school districts to provide staff training at least once every two years to identify the supports needed by LGBTQIAA+ pupils. SBCUSD has been ahead of this curve and training staff in this area for the last five years.

Juneteenth, or June 19, 1865, is considered the date when the last slaves in America were freed. In 2023 Governor Newsom officially recognized Juneteenth as a state holiday and the third Saturday in June of each year to be known as Juneteenth National Freedom Day: A Day of Observance. The Board of Education of the San Bernardino City Unified School District recognizes June 19 as Juneteenth and urges people to join in celebrating Juneteenth as a day to honor and reflect on the significant role that African Americans have played in the history of the United States and how they have enriched society through their commitment to promoting freedom, brotherhood, unity, and equality.

Marshall Elementary's SeaPerch robotics team competed at the University of Maryland as the Mustang Bots at the International SeaPerch Challenge from May 31st to June 1st. Although the Mustang Bots did not win the gold, they achieved an impressive ranking in the top 40, competing against middle school students as an elementary team! As 3rd and 4th graders, the students displayed remarkable qualities including teamwork, sportsmanship, communication, determination, and compassion. They learned the value of perseverance in a highly competitive field of nearly 200 teams in the Underwater Robotics Competition.

In addition to the competition, students had the opportunity to explore numerous iconic landmarks in Washington D.C., such as the Lincoln Memorial, the White House, the World War Memorial, the Washington Monument, and more. Furthermore, students toured the University of Maryland campus, broadening our horizons and enhancing our educational experience.

Mr. Nieves has been invited to teach a Seaperch Underwater Robotics Camp course at the University of California- Riverside for the Mathematics, Engineering, Science, Achievement (MESA) program. Thanks to the Expanded Learning (EXL) program for supporting the Mustang Bots in attending this international challenge and representing SBCUSD.

Pride isn't just about celebrating diversity; it's a reminder of what we mean when we say “all means ALL.” Everyone deserves the same dignity, kindness and respect, regardless of who they love or how they identify.

Throughout history, the LGBTQIAA+ community has faced discrimination and inequality and have even been denied basic human rights and were criminalized for simply being themselves.

Recent data reveals the harsh reality:
• 45% of LGBTQ youth considered su***de last year;
• 1 in 5 transgender/nonbinary youth attempted su***de;
• 36% faced physical threats or harm due to their identity;
• 53 transgender people were murdered in 2021

🌈 Celebrating Pride Month is about honoring the courage and resilience of the LGBTQIAA+ community. Let’s stand together in love and solidarity.

• El 45% de los jóvenes LGBTQ consideraron el suicidio el año pasado;
• 1 de cada 5 jóvenes transgénero/no binarios intentó suicidarse;
• El 36% se enfrentó a amenazas o daños físicos debido a su identidad;
