Today, the Board of Education proudly commemorated Hispanic Heritage Month with a cultural presentation featuring fifth-grade students from Salinas Creative Arts Elementary School.

Inspired by Día de los Mu***os, students created meaningful ofrendas to honor loved ones who have passed away. Through photographs, flowers, artwork, and other personal objects, their tributes celebrated the memories and stories that continue to live in their hearts.

This project, grounded in VAPA and GATE themes, connected students’ learning from Esperanza Rising to themes of family, identity, loss, and resilience. We are grateful to teacher William Beshears and his students for sharing their creativity, culture, and powerful stories with our SBCUSD community.

On Patriot Day and the National Day of Service and Remembrance, SBCUSD honors the lives lost on September 11, 2001, the courage of first responders, and the compassion that united our nation. We encourage our students, staff, families, and community to carry that spirit forward through service, kindness, and care for one another.

Arroyo Valley High School welcomed Congressman Pete Aguilar on September 8 for a special presentation introducing SBCUSD students to the opportunities available through our nation’s military service academies.

AVHS JROTC cadets turned out in impressive numbers, joined by students from high schools across SBCUSD who came ready to learn about the academy experience, the nomination process and the many pathways available to students interested in serving their country.

Superintendent Mauricio Arellano and Board of Education Member Michael Santos also joined the event, showing their support for students as they explore opportunities beyond high school.

A special thank you to Congressman Aguilar for investing his time in our students and helping them see just how many possibilities are within their reach. Whether their future leads to a military academy, college, career or another path of service, experiences like this help our students dream bigger and plan boldly for what comes next.
