For more information, please read the course description below:

Have you ever heard of the love triangle involving Lilith, Adam, and Eve? Have you ever wondered what Isabella and Ferdinandโ€™s Reconquista of Spain meant for the princes of Muslim faith? Are you curious as to what the mysteries of Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie have to do with ancient Egypt? Discover all these ideas and more in CAL 3300, Art and Ideas! With its global perspective, this asynchronous class invites you to study and discuss works of art and the history behind them as well as captivating stories related to the Mediterranean. We begin our cultural journey with Jewish lore surrounding Lilith and examine as a companion piece John Collierโ€™s Pre-Raphaelite painting of Adamโ€™s โ€˜first wife.โ€™

Next, we investigate a critical moment in the fifteenth-century Mediterranean: the capitulation of the Moors in Andalucia to Catholic sovereigns Isabella and Ferdinand. This event is recalled in Washington Irvingโ€™s The Alhambra and in the 1882 painting by Francisco Pradilla Ortiz. Pradilla Ortiz depicts the Moorish capitulation with Muhammad XII (ca. 1460โ€“1533) handing over the keys to the city of Granada to Isabella I of Castile (1451โ€“1504) and Ferdinand II of Aragon (1452โ€“1516). The first part of the course, then, uses art to prompt reflection on ancient lore and legends of the Holy Lands and Spain.

With this foundation in place, in the second part of the course we will investigate how Egypt, past and present, occupies the British imagination. To that end, weโ€™ll read the chapter entitled โ€œThebesโ€ from Amelia Edwardsโ€™ travelog, A Thousand Miles up the Nile. Weโ€™ll apply Edwardsโ€™s ideas about grave robbing to Conan Doyleโ€™s archaeological mystery, โ€œLot No. 249.โ€ In the work of Conan Doyle and Edwards, weโ€™ll think about the Egyptian mummy as an individual with an identity and cultural history, as an emblem of resurrection, and as a (contested) archaeological specimen. Our learning experience is enriched with a virtual tour of the Universityโ€™s RAFFMA museum, which houses the largest collection of Ancient Egyptian artifacts in Southern California.

Next, and with this archaeological framework in place, we conclude our course with Agatha Christieโ€™s Death on the Nile. Did you know famed mystery writer Christie traveled extensively in the Middle East, lived in Iraq, participated in many expeditions with her archaeologist husband, and toured ancient Egyptian sites? Christie stages her murder mystery Death on the Nile in Egypt and uses a love triangle to structure her story; this is a plot that will bring our course full circle as we return to the ideas of female empowerment and female rivalry.

This course fulfills the Diversity & Inclusiveness Pers, GE-C4 UD Arts and Humanities, Global Perspectives requirement.

A proud Cal State alumna, Dean Chuang talked about her own journey as a student, and discussed her role as a Dean. She also listened to students' concerns, and shared her advice. She even raffled off two $25 Starbucks gift cards!

Students also had the opportunity to meet with our college representative, Jessie McVicker.

Thanks again to all the students who joined us! We hope to see you all in attendance at our next Pizza with the Dean!
