African American Parent Advisory Committee Kick-Off Celebration
Friday’s event was a kickoff celebration to introduce the African American Parent Advisory Committee (AAPAC) concept to black parents with students in our Student Services programs: alternative education, special education, and preschool.
The AAPAC is a group of parents/guardians of African American students, along with school staff, coming together to ensure the success of their children. Through meetings, AAPAC members receive information, tools, and networking opportunities to help ensure the academic success of African American students. The committee’s purpose is to work with the school/county staff to identify the barriers to African-American student achievement and to advocate for the strategies, tools and resources that will eliminate those barriers.
Our goals were to introduce AAPAC, to engage our parents, and recruit them to become participants. This is only for parents with students in SBCSS programs. The welcome messages, presentation by Dr. Cherina Betters, ancestry DNA kits, performances, etc. were all designed to encourage parent participation in our AAPAC meetings.
