An Interesting Philosophy Course for Spring 2017
Phil 400b: Gödel's Incompleteness Theorems
Given the ubiquity of proof in mathematics, it is natural to suppose there are derivations within a formal system of deduction to demonstrate any arithmetical truth. In this course we develop Gödel's famous incompleteness results showing that this is not so. The results show in particular that it is not possible for a consistent 'nicely' specified deductive theory to have as consequences all the truths of arithmetic. Neither is it possible for such a theory including some basic arithmetical assumptions to demonstrate its own consistency. We develop these limiting results for the power of derivations, along with corresponding results limiting the reach of computing devices. The prerequisite is Phil 300 or consent of instructor (which will be granted in spring 2017 for students who have received a B or higher in a 300 level mathematics course.)
