If you want to be a great guitarist you need to listen to great guitarists so you can steal all their tricks. These are 6 players from my record collection who are all unique in style and genre but alike in that they use their instrument to express themselves. They learned the technique necessary to play the sound they heard in their heads. They also all have influences that they borrow from and that inform their playing.

here’s a bit of A-Punk by Vampire Weekend, which is a simple riff but tricky to play accurately. It’s a fun strumming hand exercise as you have to avoid hitting the bottom 4 strings and keep the 16th note rhythm consistent.
The first part the riff follows an A-G-D chord progression, and while the bass alternates between the root and the 3rd of each chord, the guitar alternates between the 3rd and the 5th, creating a parallel harmony.
For the second part, the bass stays playing the root notes of A-G-D but the guitar changes from the triad shapes to a new pattern that implies an A6-G6sus2-D progression, and follows the melody of the vocal in the verse.
