When soil eating persists past age three it signals pica not exploration. While toddlers naturally mouth everything as they discover their world, persistent eating of non-food items like dirt, soap, paper, or hair beyond this developmental phase can indicate pica — an eating disorder that requires medical attention. This isn't about curiosity anymore; it's your child's body or mind signaling deeper needs.

Pica often stems from three main causes: nutritional deficiencies like low iron or zinc, neurodevelopmental conditions including autism or intellectual disabilities, or significant emotional stress from family conflict, trauma, or disrupted parent-child bonds. Children may crave these substances because their bodies lack essential nutrients, or they're seeking comfort through repetitive behaviors during overwhelming times.

As a parent, seeing your child eat dirt can feel alarming and confusing. You might wonder if you're overreacting or if this is just another phase. Trust your instincts — persistent pica can lead to serious complications like intestinal blockages, lead poisoning, or infections. Your concern isn't excessive; it's protective parenting in action.

Have you noticed your child persistently eating non-food items? Share what you've observed — your experience might help other parents recognize important signs."

Seeing your baby place tiny hands in their mouth often looks unusual, but it is a healthy sign. Babies learn through touch and taste first. Their mouth helps them understand shape, texture, warmth, and movement around them daily.

This action also builds coordination. Eyes notice the hands, arms move upward, and the mouth receives them. Repeating that pattern trains muscles and strengthens brain connections needed for reaching, holding toys, and later feeding with better control every day.

Hand sucking can also calm emotions. When babies feel tired, overstimulated, or unsettled, this simple habit helps them relax. It is an early form of self-soothing that supports sleep routines and teaches comfort without depending on constant outside help.

Many parents mistake it for hunger every time. Sometimes hunger is true, but often it is exploration or teething practice. Mouth play improves oral awareness, which later helps with spoons, chewing, sounds, and accepting new food textures more easily.

Support this stage by keeping hands clean, offering safe teething toys, and allowing supervised discovery. If there is fever, pain, poor feeding, or unusual distress, ask a doctor. Most often, this milestone shows healthy growth and learning ahead.

Instead of only focusing on how much time children spend on screens, research is increasingly pointing toward a more overlooked factor: how parental screen use shapes early brain development. A 2025 study from the University of Wollongong highlights the concept of “technoference,” where parental phone use interrupts meaningful interaction with children. This includes moments of “phubbing,” or phone-snubbing, when a child attempts to engage but receives divided or absent attention. In early childhood, development depends heavily on “serve and return” interactions—simple exchanges where a child looks, gestures, or vocalizes, and the caregiver responds with eye contact, facial expression, or speech. These back-and-forth moments actively shape brain circuits responsible for language, emotional regulation, attention, and social development. When a parent is distracted by a smartphone, these loops are repeatedly broken, and the child experiences gaps in connection that can subtly influence behavior and emotional security over time. This does not mean technology must be eliminated, but rather that awareness is crucial. Protecting key interaction times such as meals, play, conversation, and bedtime ensures that children receive consistent emotional engagement. Choosing presence over distraction in these moments becomes one of the most powerful contributors to healthy brain development and long-term emotional stability.

Today is the last Monday of June 🤯 (Whaaaaat?!)

So let’s go ahead and have our last … of the month 😉!

Say to Taylor!

“Hi! I’m Taylor, proud mom of Quintyn (3) and Rogan (1). I was born and raised in Hawaii, but found my way to Texas during graduate school. I received my Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Houston. My husband and I have also lived in Austin and Canyon Lake before settling in San Antonio.

I’m a battery scientist and researcher at EPRI, a non-profit energy research institute with a mission to drive innovation that ensures clean, safe, reliable, affordable, and equitable public access to electricity. I’m involved in a number of projects understanding the technical feasibility and the environmental, health, and safety impacts of various energy storage technologies. My area of expertise is lithium-based batteries, but I also investigate sodium-based, zinc-based, iron-based, solid-state, and flow batteries (to name a few).

Outside of work, Quintyn and I are a part of Mana Dance Studio, a Hawaiian and Chamoru dance school. We perform at various cultural events throughout the year. Recently, I’ve been spending more time working towards starting a non-profit organization with my family that will support the Native Hawaiian community in Hawaii through cultural and STEM education. I also enjoy traveling experiencing new cuisines.”
