New Faculty Publication: Bringing Modern Cosmology into the Undergraduate Classroom

Dr. Patrick Greene of St. Mary's Universityrsity has published a new article, “An Introduction to Homogeneous Scalar Fields in Cosmology,” in the European Journal of Physics.

Scalar fields play a central role in modern cosmology, providing a framework for understanding phenomena ranging from cosmic inflation—the extremely rapid expansion of the early universe—to possible explanations for the dark energy driving the accelerated expansion of the universe today.

The article makes these research-level ideas accessible to advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students through physical intuition, analytic examples, numerical computation, and exercises. The work grew in part from Greene’s teaching of undergraduate cosmology at St. Mary's University and reflects his interest in bringing modern theoretical physics into the undergraduate curriculum.

📢 We are proud to share that Dr. Kaitlin Hill has been awarded a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to support the project “Collaborative Research: Conference: Texas Undergraduate Mathematics Conference 2025–2026.”

This initiative will introduce students to research pathways early in their academic journey while fostering research engagement and collaboration across Texas institutions.
