Celebrate Juneteenth with our newest FREE program at the San Antonio Public Library! Come learn about the roots of Early Black American/Soulaan music and why it was so impactful on every contemporary genre today. We will be getting deep into the DNA of Black American music and discussing multiple genres including Juba, Mississippi Fife, Jazz, Gospel, and of course the Blues.
This presentation is ideal for discovering genres you've never heard of and gaining a new understanding of the connections to West African tradition. You won't just leave with generalizations about West African music, but specific traditions and tribes that helped inform our musical practices. You'll also get a better understanding of the conditions that led to evolutions in Black music and an understanding of how Soulaan/African American music is interconnected with the Black Diaspora as a whole.
If you've seen our Ten Heritage tribes presentation, this is a great follow up, getting even more in-depth with your understanding of how the tribes we learned about contributed specifically to the realm of music.
This is a great presentation for anyone looking to expand their knowledge of music and history. We look forward to seeing you there!!

If someone were to ask me why I do what I do, this would be my reply.❤️
Seeing multiple generations learn and grow is an honor. Being able to pour back into my elders while also encouraging the youth is one of the most important things I will ever do with my life. Providing this education isn't just a passion for me, it feels like an obligation to share the things that I learn.
During one of my lectures, I was discussing Djeli (also known as griots) and one of my participants reacted by saying that I was a Djeli. An oral historian. Who knew that I would keep walking down that path but I remember almost crying at the honor of being referred to that way.
If you've showed up for my lectures, shared my posts, or interacted with me in any way, I want to give a giant THANK YOU. Please keep supporting my work in this age of misinformation and confusion. TOGETHER we can heal our communities through knowledge.

We just read an amazing Black children's book we have to share! The tradition of storytelling followed us across the Atlantic ocean and has stayed a vibrant part of Soulaan culture. "A Million Fish...More or Less" explores a spectacular tale in the Bayou Clapateaux, where strange things tend to happen. The illustrations are gorgeous and the story is super fun! Check it out.
