Remembering Jose Esparza
BUA mourns the passing of alumnus Jose Esparza and remembers with gratitude his time as a member of our university.
Jose graduated with a Diploma in Church Ministries: Concentration in Theology on May 15, 1998. He will always be remembered as part of the BUA family. We are grateful for the time he spent as a student and for the impact his life had on those around him.
We extend our deepest condolences and prayers to Jose’s wife, Celia, and to his family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. May they find comfort in God’s presence and in the memories of a life well lived.
Rest in peace, Jose. You will be remembered.

Dr. Daniel J. Rivera entered the presence of the Lord on Monday, July 27, 2026. He faithfully served as the third president, and the first Hispanic president, of Baptist University of the Américas, then known as the Mexican Baptist Bible Institute, from 1976 to 1988.
During his leadership, Dr. Rivera was instrumental in advancing the institution's academic standing. His vision led to the school's renaming as the Hispanic Baptist Theological Seminary in 1982 and the introduction of its first accredited associate degree programs. He later continued his commitment to Christian higher education as Director of Howard Payne University's New Braunfels Center.
Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Rivera received many honors and accolades. Yet his most enduring legacy was his passion for encouraging Hispanic men and women to pursue higher education while equipping them to serve faithfully in God's Kingdom.
At BUA we will honor his life by continuing the work he championed and following the example of faith, service, and leadership he leaves behind.
