This summer, Emmanuel Quintero, our Mosaics in Science Intern is working as a Geology Assistant for the park alongside Dr. Evelynn Mitchell of St. Mary's University. They are focused on Mission Concepción, which has previously experienced the formation of a sinkhole near its foundation. Using ground-penetrating radar (pictured here) and Geographic Information Systems, they hope to understand more about the underlying geology of the mission. By learning more about the ground beneath our feet, they can provide insight to the National Park Service on how best to approach the subsidence, or sinking, that now threatens Mission Concepción.

The Mosaics in Science program provides short-term positions focusing on STEM inventory and monitoring, conservation, and management, research, and education and outreach projects in National Park Service units across the Unites States. The long-term goal of the program is to develop the talents of its participants and hire the best and brightest into careers with the National Park Service, helping to support a diverse workforce that more accurately reflects the diversity of the United States.
