Sixth graders performed a musical version of the children's book When Step Met Skip for the kindergarten class this week. Students played guitar, piano, and xylophone to bring the characters to life — teaching kindergarteners how smooth steps and exciting skips sound on a musical staff. Such a creative way to share music across grade levels.

Little School students got a special visitor this week: veterinarian Dr. Chris LaBrie, a Keystone alum from the Class of 2005 — and a Keystone dad. Dr. LaBrie spoke about caring for animals with kindness and compassion. Then students performed surgery on stuffed dogs and cats, delivered puppies and kittens, and got to keep them. What a great experience!

Congratulations to the eight Keystone seniors named Commended Students in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program. They are among approximately 34,000 students receiving this recognition from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, out of the 1.2 million eligible students who took the PSAT in 2025. They are (from left): Brian, Ashwin, Jack, Raymond, Emily, Kunling, Vienna, Ryan. Together with our two Semifinalists, this represents 34% of our senior class receiving National Merit honors. Way to go!

Recently, 9th graders spent their Outdoor Education week at Olympic National Park near Seattle. They hiked, canoed, explored Marymere Falls, and tackled Storm King Mountain — 5 miles with 1,400 feet of elevation gain. They also collected water samples at the Elwha River to test for optimal salmon health and spawning conditions. A good week of science and class bonding.

In honor of International Dot Day last week, sophomores brought their favorite children's books to campus this week and read with second graders. The visit was organized by Student Council reps Isa, Minili, and Pia, working with creative writing teacher Ms. Ramirez. A good reminder that some books are worth revisiting at any age.

Kindergarteners hit the campus trails this week for a Five Senses Nature Walk during STEAM class with Ms. Tammy. They carried clipboards, recorded their observations on worksheets, and discovered what our campus looks, sounds, smells, feels, and maybe tastes like. Science starts early at Keystone.

Students in Dr. Lopez's Modern Global Issues: History Through Food class this week made dishes from historical cookbooks spanning centuries and continents. On the menu: ancient Roman savillum cheesecake, salsa from an 1831 Mexican cookbook, potato croquettes from a 1930 Good Housekeeping cookbook, and a Mughal-era rice and paneer dish. History has never tasted this good.

Ms. Ramirez's Creative Writing class did something a little different this week: poem speed dating. Students sat across from each other in pairs, shared a favorite poem and their thoughts on it in three minutes, then rotated to a new partner. Each student introduced their poem — and a writing prompt inspired by it — to six different classmates.
