Every summer, massive mats of Sargassum seaweed wash ashore along the Gulf Coast. While it provides open-ocean shelter in small doses, recent overgrowth has suffocated ecosystems, driven away tourists and released toxic gases.

The culprit? Agricultural and urban runoff dumps excess nitrogen and phosphorus into waterways, feeding harmful algal blooms and creating marine dead zones.

Researchers in Klesse College are tackling both challenges through one single circular solution.

Shalinee Kavadiya, assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical and Chemical Engineering, is leading a team to transform harvested seaweed into 3D-printed, reusable filtration modules designed to capture runoff nutrients before they reach the ocean. Working alongside co-principal investigator Vikram Kapoor, Ph.D., the team dries and powders the invasive seaweed to create composite materials for porous, recyclable filtration units.

SA+P Studio Brief

Isaac Knott’s experience at Klesse College shows the value of learning by doing. As part of a summer research project at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West, Isaac worked alongside fellow graduate students to measure, document and research historic buildings as part of the Historic American Buildings Survey. Their work earned second place in the prestigious Charles E. Peterson Competition.

For Isaac, the experience went beyond documenting architecture. It gave him a deeper understanding of place, materials and architectural history through hands-on research. This is the kind of immersive experience we want for students at Klesse College, where classroom learning becomes real-world knowledge and preparation for their future careers.

Research experiences can give students the opportunity to move beyond the classroom and contribute to solutions for real-world challenges.

A new $420,000+ National Science Foundation (NSF) grant will provide 27 undergraduate students with hands-on research opportunities focused on natural hazards and disaster-resilient infrastructure. Students will work alongside researchers and across disciplines, gaining experience in how research can help communities better prepare for and respond to natural disasters.

These experiences are an important part of preparing Klesse College students for graduate study, research careers and the challenges they will tackle as professionals.
