Where were you on September 11, 2001?

That Tuesday morning, I was serving as a Marine Corps captain on active duty as the Operations Officer for Recruiting Station New Orleans. The Marines of RS New Orleans were working on shipping our recruits (future Marines) to MCRD San Diego when my cell phone rang. It was my dad, a former Marine, and he said to find a TV as soon as I could because a tragedy was unfolding in New York City. At about the same time, cell phones, and office phones, started ringing, all with the same message: America is under attack. —Vincent Bosquez, Captain USMC Retired.

Last night, September 9, 2,977 drones rose over New York Harbor and formed the Twin Towers at full architectural scale.

The lights first gathered into a helix, swirling upward before assembling into the shape of the towers.

There were exactly 2,977 lights, one for every person killed in the September 11 attacks.

The installation, called “2,977 Lights Over New York Harbor,” was created for the 25th anniversary of 9/11 and shaped with input from victims’ families, survivors and first responders. Among those involved was retired FDNY firefighter Tim Brown, who lost close friends on 9/11. Three of the lights honored firefighters Chris Blackwell, Terry Hatton and Michael Lynch.

The towers eventually broke apart back into individual lights.
