Philosopher Andrew Brei will be helping us learn about and unpack the writings of conservationist Aldo Leopold while staying rooted in close observation of the natural world. Then he and artist Mark Menjívar will invite attendees into a new writing project that will span the year. Doors open at 6pm. Talk to start at 6:30pm. Light snacks and drinks provided. Andrew Brei is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at St. Mary’s University. He is the Director of the St. Mary’s Center for Professional Ethics and is also the Charles H. Miller Chair in Human Dignity. He teaches a variety of courses––from introductory courses in philosophy and ethics to upper-level courses in environmental philosophy, medical ethics, and the philosophy of food––all of which aim to help students gain a better understanding of themselves, of human nature, and of our place in the world. His research has involved questions about moral motivation, the ethics of bullfighting, and ways of infusing the Liberal Arts in an engineering program. Most recently, Andrew has been focusing on the philosophy of travel and is currently thinking and writing about pilgrimage as a category of travel, exploring the ways in which it fosters community, involves meaning, and deepens belonging.

This summer has given us a lot to celebrate in arts education! 🎨

For the past four years, we’ve partnered with Edgewood ISD to bring professional development, hands-on learning and fresh ideas to visual arts educators. What started as professional development has grown into an ongoing relationship built on creativity, collaboration and mentorship.

This year, we were joined by some incredible community partners: Maureen Doebbler, Vice President of TAEA, shared opportunities through the Texas Art Education Association; Juan Zapata Castro highlighted opportunities at Contemporary at Blue Star and the Mini Art Museum; Lacey Mills got everyone creating with a hands-on Gelli printmaking lesson for the classroom, Tanesha Payne with sumRset Movement with what to do with an idea session, Andrea “VOCAB” Sanderson with finding creative voice, and Turnip Ensemble Theater’s Ruthie Buescher with a Perfoming arts breakout in devising and student voice.

And the impact is growing! This summer, Dr. Loudenback invited us to design and produce four days of Visual Arts professional development for Medina Valley ISD. A big thank you to Dr. Loudenback for the opportunity to work with Medina Valley’s educators and begin building a new partnership!

Alongside lead instructor Alex Casso, we explored neighborhood, identity and connections between the classroom and community.

Beginning this September, volunteer industry professionals will join 5th-grade classrooms to help students explore art, architecture, and the built world through hands-on projects and real-world connections.

Share your expertise. Spark creativity. Introduce students to careers they may have never imagined.
The commitment: ten weekly, 90-minute lessons alongside an artist instructor and classroom teacher.
