At Discovery School, our classes focused on the virtues of Generosity and Giving this month, discovering how wonderful it feels to give. There are many ways to be generous, and our classes learned how a gift can be something you make, say, or do.
Thank you to all who gave of their time and money to bring something special, and beautifully wrapped for our Angel Giving Tree. Your efforts have perpetuated the Goodness in Mankind.

We spent the last week in joyous community, learning about the different ways people celebrate this cold and dark time of year. Rhyming Christmas lights, counting candles, stretching our fine motor skills while making a jingle bell necklace…it’s always the season to play and learn!
One of Discovery School’s long time traditions has been for classes to go to a family’s house for their Winter party. It is a special time to learn first hand a classmate’s holiday traditions. This was the first year since Covid we were able to do so and we are so happy! There is great value in being a gracious host, an honored guest as well as experiencing another’s traditions that are different from your own.

May this Winter Break bring you Peace and Love and a Goodwill towards men.
Merry Christmas!

Our playground oak has been dropping leaves and finally there are enough to make a pile! Many of our trees have graced our playground with colorful leaves of all shapes and sizes, encouraging creativity and wonder at the world around us.
We play as we learn, and learn as we play.
This week we also learned about reindeer with a visit from Crystal, Hope, and Faith; 3 reindeer from Zoomagination! As we watched them sit under a fan, blowing cool air in the warm Texas fall, we asked questions and learned about these Arctic beauties.
Our 3 year old classes took a trip to our local bakery to experience a (very important!) part of our community.
Discovery School believes in the strength of community. We strive to provide authentic experiences for our students, and are able to do so with the help of our community. With many components of society positively impacting our youngest generations, a more wholesome, bright future we create.

We are so very thankful to La Popular Bakery on West Ave. for letting us visit year after year!
Heartfelt gratitude for Zoomagination, bringing the natural world’s wonders to our doorstep. It is nourishing the connection of the next generation to our beloved planet, and we are all grateful for that!

Book Fair: Made Possible By Readers Like You!...thank you!
(that's PBS's line, but I think it fits here too 📚)

Wow! Last week was lit(erary). I don't know about you, but I had no shelf control with how many books I bought. I mean, it was bound to happen. Friends asked if my sons and I could have a play date; unfortunately, I declined because we were fully booked.

Now that I've made you cringe on a Tuesday, I'd like to give you, our Discovery School community, a big thank you for coming to our wee, cozy book fair. We saw so many families excitedly perusing the shelves and students telling their teachers their favorite books. Not only that, but a majority of our teachers' wishlists were fulfilled because of your generous donations. I would also like to give a massive thank you to our volunteers! The entire week was awesome, wholesome, and one for the book fair memory album.

We hope the books you added (or gifted 🎁) to your home library will be read many times and become a new favorite.

See you at the next book fair!

p.s. If you didn't get a chance to come to Book Fair, don't worry! You can still support Discovery School by shopping online.

P.p.s We'd love to see the books your family and you bought! Post your book haul on the comments below 📚✨

Teamwork makes the dream work! We see it all the time in the classroom and on the playground, students working together for a common goal. It’s a beautiful life skill to see being stretched.
It is also a joy to see a student working hard on something alone. Whether they are on the playground constructing a plan into action, or in science class making taffy, our students are hardworking all around! Even our Two Year Olds used their garden mint to make Lime-Mint cookies!
We play as we learn and learn as we play!

Together, Discovery School donated A LOT of food for the Delview Food Pantry at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church!

Today, the Kinder and First Grade performed for our school community, filling hearts with beauty, love, and gratitude.
The School itself rejoiced with thanks for the loving families and the many talented students echoing down its halls.
With song, dance, and drum our community departed for the holiday.
On behalf of us all at Discovery School, we wish you and your family a week of good food, good company, and a spirit of thanksgiving.

As it sprinkled rain and the wild wind blew, gratitude blew into our hearts as we took time to honor our military families yesterday. We are thankful for the sacrifice they make for the good of their families, for the good of our country. As we take a moment to ponder the many freedoms we enjoy, let us in the same hand thank those who make it possible.
We salute you, Veterans.

Today in our Kinder and First Grade Spanish classes, students celebrated El Dia de las Memorias, an adaptation of Mexico‘s El Dia de los Mu***os. Students were encouraged to bring a favorite photo, candy, or flower of a person they love who is either living or who has passed on. The children worked together to create la ofrenda and shared in the delightful autumn weather, pan de mu**to. It was a lovely day to remember our ancestors and those we love!

Discovery School cultivates a rich web of community! In addition to the many events that bring families together throughout the year, our school delights in sharing one another’s special holidays and traditions.
This week we celebrated Diwali, a holiday to celebrate the victory of Light over Darkness. The families who celebrate Diwali graciously shared their traditions with their child’s class.
The Breezeway was glowing with Love and Laughter all week; we were thankful to have taken the time to honor such a beautiful holiday.
We hope you enjoyed your Diwali as well.

Discovery School was bustling after dark last night!
Traditionally called Dad’s Night, we have extended this event to include Loved Ones who typically are not a part of their student’s school experience.
Students proudly brought their Special Guest into their classroom to show them around and do a creative project together. From dissecting owl pellets to painting hands, cookies and cupcakes; it was a good time had by all!

In the 4s Program, we get creative when learning our letters! Handmade Tacos, Tape fun, Tree studies, and and an epic Toilet paper party help the students learn the sound of the letter T while also exercising students’ fine motor control, number sense, literacy development, and creativity.
We love to watch them learn as they play. It is a fun way to spend the day.
Magic abounds at Discovery School!

Another spectacular display of knowledge from our Discovery 1st Grade!
It was obvious to the whole playground what the First Grade had on their minds: Volcanoes.
From Geography to Art, reading fiction and non-fiction books about volcanoes, to building their own. This unit of study caused such an excitement in the minds of our students, the whole playground was able to share in their joy of learning.
Sand volcanoes and papier-mâché ones too, it was a week to remember.
Life is not dormant here at Discovery School!

At Discovery School, we pair older classes with younger classes to meet once a week for Garden Buddies! The two classes spend time in the garden together learning how to care for plants and inquiring about the world around them. It gives the older students an opportunity to mentor younger students, creating a beautiful web of community within our school.
This week the two year olds learned how roots suck water up by drinking out of a straw!
☘️We Play As We Learn, And Learn As We Play☘️

Science is embedded in many of the ways we play at Discovery School! Our youngest students, the 2 year olds, built an Acorn Shoot to observe the effects of gravity after learning about it. In the 3 year old classrooms, students experiment with baking soda and vinegar to observe chemical reactions, with a splash of color for fun!
At Discovery School, the 4 year olds, Kinder kids, and First Grade have a Science class built into their weekly schedule where they are able to learn in a more formal setting and perform more advanced scientific experiments.
We play as we learn, and learn as we play.

Photos from Discovery School of San Antonio's post 09/17/2022

In our Kindergarten classes, we use manipulatives to help students learn core concepts, how to work cooperatively, and to solidify content they have been exposed to.
This week our Kindergarten students are learning about pond habitats. As luck would have it, we have a pond on campus where we were able to use many of our senses to explore deeper what a pond is.
We have fun days learning as we play and playing as we learn!

Here at Discovery School we believe in getting our hands dirty!
Our youngest students, the 2 year olds, planted Rosemary and Oregano behind their classrooms and 3 weeks into school they are able to harvest some of it to make a vinaigrette for their families.
What full sensory fun, practicing their fine motor skills and working to strengthen their hands!
They helped each step of the way, apart from trimming the plants, as two year olds can be overly helpful! 😅

Discovery School’s First Grade.
From stretching in Motor Skills before playing a new game to walking out measurements on the Breezeway, our students are gaining skills inside and out of the classroom!
After a day of learning and playing, first grade ends in special ritual with the Talking Stick; listening to each other share their favorite part of the day.
What magic fill our days!
We learn as we play and play as we learn.

🎶 It’s the most wonderful time of the year! 🎶
Back to School!
For the experienced parent, and the newbie..Cheers, Tears, & Tacos on the first day of school. A time to cry, or whoop and holler, and also to eat tacos. Starting school can be as hard on parents as the student. We hope you felt the love of your Discovery community!

The kids? Well, it doesn’t take them long to warm up to all the fun around here! We have all been having a great first week getting to know each other.

And to end our fantastic first week was our Watermelon Welcome! We are elated to welcome back all our old families, and welcome our new families into our community.

We learn as we play and play as we learn!
(Shhhh! Don’t tell our students!)

It’s been a breeze having so much fun with our students this week! We were blown away learning about our air and the different gases that make it up. We did science experiments to further explore carbon dioxide, helium, and water v***r. Our littles made kazoos (a wind instrument) and our older kids made their own whip cream (just add air!). It was a week full of hot air and cool learning!
