What a great turn out for our first day of Book Fair! If you missed a chance to peruse through our collection, the fair will run until this Friday, December 3rd.

If you can't join us during school hours, on November 30th (tomorrow), shopping hours are until 6pm. In conjunction with Book Fair, we're hosting a one day only craft fair in the Butterfly Building backyard. Bring your family and friends for the books and stay for the good company and hot cocoa. It'll be your one stop shop for holiday gift giving!

In the spirit of the holidays and giving, Girl Scout Brownie Troop 745 (all Discovery School Alumnae) will collect new and gently used books during the week of the Scholastic Book Fair to benefit children living with Visitation House Ministries, a non-profit securing transitional housing to women/children in need. Books for children ages 1-10 are welcomed.

Happy Reading!

To celebrate the bounty of food and friendship, Discovery School holds a Fall Harvest Celebration each year that is lead by our first grade and kindergarten. It is a multicultural celebration giving thanks for our community, thanks to the food we eat, and sending a message of Welcome for all. The first graders, who have been working hard to hone their drumming skills all year, were able to share them today with our community. They sang a song as they drummed called Funwa Alafia, a song in the Yoruba language of West Africa. The drums they play are also from Ghana, West Africa.
Kindergartners shared a song of thanks as they danced in the Native American tradition of the Round Dance. The Round Dance is a communal dance of friendship open to all. The Kindergartners made their own shirts, dying them with black tea to create an earthy shirt in which they painted corn to symbolize the harvest. They also cut cotton strips and dyed them in turmeric to dance with in the celebration.
At Discovery School we uphold the gift of diversity in our world and offer it to the young minds of our children. With this multicultural celebration not only are we showing the importance of giving thanks for our food and families, but also thanks for the rich cultures of the world.
A big thanks to our Music Teacher, who researched the history of each song and dance so as to assure our celebration is respectful to the cultures we have borrowed from. Thank you for enriching our children’s lives once again with the gift of song and dance.

We play as we learn, and learn as we play.

This week the first graders created a voting booth for our entire school to participate in. Teaching the importance of being a good citizen and the many qualities that fall under that “title”, the first graders were able to utilize the knowledge they have learned about the voting process by teaching it to our younger students! They created voting signs and a ballot with three different items to vote upon. Patiently, they helped our younger students who cannot read through the ballot and taught them to fold their ballot to create privacy and showed them how to put it in the ballot box. Each student who voted also got a sticker!
To end the week, we took time on Thursday to honor our community’s veterans. We are so thankful for those who have fought and continue to fight for our freedom here in the United States of America 🇺🇸
It is our honor to hold a ceremony, albeit quaint, to honor the sacrifices of our elders, our peers, in service. Thank you to all those who have served.

Combining the spooky feels of Halloween and hands-on learning, our students were visited by an Emperor Scorpion, a Mexican Redknee Tarantula, and a handful of other nocturnal animals, thanks to Zoomagination! Our students learned what a nocturnal animal is, what each animal eats, and where they live. They even had the opportunity to touch a few of the animals!
Zoomagination is a local, nonprofit animal outreach whose mission is to foster love and respect for the animals that share our world by providing healing, refuge, community education, and advocacy to meet the needs of unwanted, abandoned, and surrendered exotic animals and displaced indigenous wildlife.
Thank you Zoomagination for enriching our learning and making our Halloween especially spooky!

A cumulative end to an explosive week of learning, the first graders erupted the volcano they helped build out of papier-mâché! They also had individual presentations on a specific volcano where each student was able to share what they learned with the class and practice their public speaking skills.
We play as we learn and learn as we play!

Thanks to the efforts of our 2.5 year old class, we were visited by the Poteet Fire Department!
All week the 2.5 year old class has been learning about fire safety. With a song, they have learned about objects that get hot and not to touch them! They have practiced how to Stop, Drop, and Roll. In the dramatic play center, they were able to pretend to be a fireman in a fire truck.
A big THANK YOU to the Poteet Fire Department for visiting our school to teach our children about fire safety, showing us what a real fireman looks like and what to do in case of a fire. We loved their mascot, Sparky!

Our youngest class, the 2 year olds, have their own playground where they help nurture a variety of herbs that are planted. Herbs are a wonderful way to provide a multi-sensory learning experience. This past week, they harvested the herbs and prepared them to be made into a tasty vinaigrette for their families!
At Discovery School, masks are strongly encouraged with our 2s, and required for everyone 3 and up.

In our dynamic 3 year old program we have just started a Transportation Unit of Study. For the next two weeks, classes will explore and learn different modes of transportation in a myriad of ways. In one class, they hammered on a circle and then laced it to make spokes on a wheel. Another class sorts pictures of different modes of transportation. Today, making the connection of play and real life, our 3s rode the zoo train and were able to experience a different mode of transportation.

It’s time to plant!

Here at Discovery School we pair a lower aged class with a higher aged class to be Garden Buddies! The two classes meet once a week in the garden to practice gardening skills, play in the dirt (which is beneficial for neurological development), and have the chance to mentor a friend. Here, one of the 3 year old classes is planting seeds with a “big kid” 4 year old class. This is an opportunity not only to learn about gardening and the world around us but also it is a chance for the big kids to help teach the little ones. These kinds of interactions lead to confidence in oneself and empathy for others.
We love our Garden Buddies!
