June 19th, 1865, also known as Juneteenth, is significant in Texas as the day the emancipation proclamation decision reached our state.

We celebrate this day in honor of remembering the emancipation of African Americans who had been enslaved in the United States.

What began as a personal class assignment became an award‑winning essay and a defining moment in her academic journey.

Mexican American Studies student Abril “Andi” Garcia-Linn received top national honors from the National Association for Chicana and Chicano Studies (NACCS) Fredrick Cervantes Premio competition.

Her story is one of identity, resilience, and finding her place in academia.

Carlos Camacho, a first-generation and transfer student, is earning his master’s in Bicultural‑Bilingual Education while serving in the Army and with UT San Antonio Army ROTC. Soon to commission as a Second Lieutenant in Air Defense Artillery, he hopes to pair his military service with a career teaching bilingual students.

After moving from Colorado to San Antonio, Amy Hardy found a supportive community at UT San Antonio that reshaped her academic path. She will graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Mexican American Studies, a journey that helped her reconnect with her heritage, and she is now preparing to pursue a MAS graduate certificate and an MBA at UT San Antonio.
