The UIW Department of Psychology proudly co‑sponsored the inaugural San Antonio Area Psychology Symposium on February 13, 2026, hosted at UTSA and supported by a grant from the Association for Psychological Science.
Dr. Leslie Martinez served as a member of the planning committee in coordinating this collaborative event with partner colleges and universities across the region. Several UIW students attended, networked with faculty from local graduate programs, and presented their co‑authored research.
A special congratulations to Sydney Wiggins, senior Psychology major, who earned 2nd place in undergraduate research and a $100 award! 👏
UIW faculty also enjoyed reconnecting with alumni who are thriving in graduate and post‑graduate work.
Our student officers from the UIW Chapter of Psi Chi Honor Society, attended the SA Symposium and networked with student organizations from other universities. This is the first step in getting to know psychology students from other universities.

The Men's USA Gymnastic team got Bronze at the Olympics and appear to be thrilled about it! Congratulations to them on a great accomplishment. Did you notice that Bronze medalists sometimes appear to be happier than Silver medalists? A 1995 Social Psychology article explained that Olympic Bronze medalists may see themselves as the last winner while silver medalist may view themselves as the first loser (Medvec, Madey, & Gilovich). This is called counterfactual thinking. The closer we are to a goal, the more emotional when we do not reach it. (see comments for a link to more information).
