Although I understand and applaud the sentiment...I am compelled to jump in. It is a dysfunctional relationship that relies on another to change or make a life. The easiest people to lead are those skilled at leading themselves and that do not rely solely on their leaders to build their career for them. Leaders are guides and resources - NOT career drivers! I absolutely have the power to influence my leader's ability to lead me effectively. I also possess the power- consciously or not - to influence poor leadership. If you contribute to my career or work negatively, I am out- or I craft an exit plan. That is within my choice and power. If a leader provides needed resources, insight, and access for my performance and growth, I am in! I do not even need to like you! I would still call you a "good" boss. All this to say, let's leave the personal responsibility and power in the contributor-leader relationship! The individual is the owner of their career and the one MOST vested in it. Letting someone else sit in the driver seat will land them where someone else wants them to be, which typically is a long ways away from the intended destination!
