A study of more than 600 nuns that started in 1990 continues to guide dementia research today.

Researchers said the nuns were a valuable population for the study because their adult lives looked very similar. They shared comparable housing, nutrition, social networks and education levels.

“Normally, it’s hard to pinpoint what causes some people to develop dementia while others remain healthy because people can have very different lifestyles… some smoke, some don’t, some have better access to health care than others, some may be more genetically disposed to disease,” Kyra Clarke, a doctoral student at UT Health San Antonio and one of the study review’s authors, said.

Brain donation was a pre-requisite to join the “Nun Study,” and after the participants’ deaths, the study also yielded one of the largest samples of brain tissue ever collected for Alzheimer’s research.

Circadian rhythm regulates sleep, but researchers at UT Health San Antonio are investigating how this internal clock coordinates essential bodily functions throughout the day and night: Including blood pressure, heart rate and temperature.

Kevin Kornowski, PhD, is an assistant professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Structural Biology at the Long School of Medicine. His lab studies circadian rhythm, and as Texas Public Radio reports, he's currently working to understand the rhythm of fat metabolism.

The Department of Emergency Medicine residency program received the largest share of a state of Texas grant to help train emergency care doctors.

Texas is investing $510,000 in UT Health San Antonio to attract emergency and trauma care doctors, as well as support patient care in Bexar County.

“That money goes toward resident salary support, education support, and enables us to really provide exceptional care for the patients,” Chris Gelabert, MD, director of the emergency medicine residency program, told KSAT 12 & KSAT.com.

Breast cancer research is advancing at UT Health San Antonio, from understanding the disease to improving life after treatment.

Amelie G. Ramirez, DrPH, MPH, is leading a two-year, $400,000 Susan G. Komen-funded study examining whether therapeutic yoga can improve quality of life, reduce fatigue, and enhance physical function among breast cancer survivors in South Texas.

By comparing therapeutic yoga with standard physical therapy, researchers hope to identify new, culturally responsive approaches to cancer survivorship and recovery.

This is one example of how researchers at UT Health San Antonio are working to advance breast cancer research and improve outcomes for patients and survivors.
