Study: Vaccination lowers long Covid risk, even when people are infected

Vaccination reduces risk of long Covid, even when people are infected, U.K. study indicates.

“We found that the odds of having symptoms for 28 days or more after post-vaccination infection were approximately halved by having two vaccine doses,” researchers wrote in the study, published in the journal The Lancet Infectious Diseases. “This result suggests that the risk of long Covid is reduced in individuals who have received double vaccination, when additionally considering the already documented reduced risk of infection overall.”

Inside Pfizer’s labs, ‘variant hunters’ race to stay ahead of the pandemic’s next twist

Delta still has ways to cause more breakthrough infections in vaccinated people: It spreads more efficiently, has a shorter incubation period, and produces a higher viral load in those infected. But the test results showed the vaccine itself was working well.

New Evidence Points To Antibodies As A Reliable Indicator Of Vaccine Protection

While more studies are needed to confirm the findings, discovering that these markers correlate with immune protection has implications for future COVID-19 vaccine research. It means that researchers now can measure whether a new COVID-19 vaccine might work — without necessarily having to repeat large-scale efficacy studies.

Amaro believes the research team's gate discovery opens potential avenues for new therapeutics to counter SARS-CoV-2 infection. If glycan gates could be pharmacologically locked in the closed position, then the virus is effectively prevented from opening to entry and infection.

If jurisdictions are instead proactive about containment, meaning that they make decisions based on infection rates beyond their borders, less than 2% of their population is infected.

Scientists debate potential benefits of intranasal Covid-19 vaccines

A snort or a jab? Scientists debate potential benefits of intranasal Covid-19 vaccines.

AstraZeneca is working on an intranasal version of the vaccine it developed with Oxford University. A recently published animal study of the experimental vaccine at NIAID’s Rocky Mountain Laboratories in Hamilton, Mont., showed that hamsters vaccinated with the intranasal vaccine and then experimentally infected with SARS-2 had less virus in their nasal passages than exposed hamsters that hadn’t been vaccinated. Importantly, the vaccines still protected the animals’ lungs.

Does the Location of a Hospital Room Affect Quality of Care?

“The main takeaway, which is a relief, is that nurses do a great job: they are really equitable about how they are allotting time,” Meng says. “Regardless of where patients were on the ED floor they got the same amount of face time—but, importantly, it was delivered in a different way.”

‘Breakthrough’ Infections Do Not Mean COVID Vaccines Are Failing

Another worry with breakthrough cases is passing the virus to others. But people infected “tend to be less likely to transmit, no matter what we’re looking at,” Smith says. “We see this with viruses and bacteria—even with pertussis, one of the reasons that people try to ‘cocoon’ around infants” who cannot initially be vaccinated against that disease. “Cocooning” refers to vaccinating those who spend time with the infant as a protective barrier because the pertussis vaccine is not administered before the age of two months.

Texas Nurses Overwhelmed By Staffing Shortages And Newest COVID Wave

The Texas Department of State Health Services tracks hospitalization data for the 21 trauma service areas that cover the state. Over the past week, each area saw an increase in the percentage of beds allotted for COVID-19 patients. COVID-related cases currently comprise about 7.5% of all hospitalizations in the Austin area. That number is closer to 13.5% in the Killeen area.

If an area crosses the 15% mark for COVID-related hospitalizations for seven days in a row, an executive order signed by Gov. Greg Abbott would require hospitals in that area to postpone elective surgeries and procedures.

Siloed overdose data pose challenges for researchers 08/02/2021

Siloed overdose data pose challenges for researchers

Overdose data, often scattered and siloed, pose challenges for researchers racing to predict risk.

“Data linkage should involve datasets that cover most major health and social agencies and a range of indicators of social functioning and disadvantage,” said Chrianna Bharat, a research associate at the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre in Australia and co-author of the paper. Syncing those different datasets — which would take policy changes and a cultural shift in how health data is shared — would broaden the kind of work modelers could do.
