A classroom has to work for every child in it.

Yes, every student deserves support. Every student deserves patience, understanding, and the opportunity to succeed. Some children will naturally need more help than others, and good teachers will do everything they reasonably can to provide it.

But there are 25 or 30 other children sitting in that classroom too.

They also deserve the teacher’s attention. They deserve to hear the lesson without constant interruptions. They deserve to feel safe. They deserve a classroom where learning can actually happen.

Individual support should never become unlimited attention at everyone else’s expense.

When one student’s behavior repeatedly stops the lesson, consumes enormous amounts of the teacher’s time, or creates an environment where everyone else struggles to learn, ignoring the impact on the rest of the class isn’t inclusion.

It’s simply shifting the cost onto every other child in the room.

Supporting individual needs matters enormously. But so does protecting the learning, safety, and wellbeing of the entire class.

At what point does supporting one child become unfair to everyone else?
