Evidence-Based Practice Design: The Smart Choice at ROUNDhouse Martial Arts π₯π§
Using research to make informed decisions leads to better results.
At ROUNDhouse, we embrace evidence-based approaches to enhance your training experience and outcomes. ππβ¨
DATA FOR MMA PRACTICE DESIGN
The UFC Performance Institute recorded 14,443 bouts across all weight classes, analyzed the stats, and provided invaluable insights.
Hereβs how these statistics shape our training design:
Striking is Key:
60% of Fight Time at a Distance: A majority of fight time is spent trying to set up and land strikes. π₯
Focus on Striking: Our practices emphasize striking techniques and setups to find the body and chin effectively.
Clinch and Fence Work:
15% of Fight Time in the Clinch: Most of this time is spent against the fence. π€ΌββοΈ
Effective Clinching: We train athletes to dominate clinch positions and use the fence to their advantage.
Scrambling and Groundwork:
Effective Scrambling: Winning fighters are proficient at scrambling to get back on their feet and land strikes. π
Ground Drills: We incorporate drills that enhance scrambling abilities and ground control.
Submission Techniques:
Most Common Submissions: Rear naked choke and guillotine are the top submissions. π
Submission Training: Our curriculum includes focused training on these high-percentage submissions.
Striking and Grappling Balance:
Quantity of Striking: Winning fighters land more strikes to the face.
Balanced Training: We ensure a balanced approach with ample striking practice, setups, takedowns, and clinch work.
Practice Design Insights:
Scrambling Up: Emphasis on getting back to the feet quickly.
Rear Naked and Guillotine Chokes: Mastery of these submissions.
Quantity of Striking Attacks: Focus on high volume and precision in striking.
Setups, Takedowns, and Clinching: Integrating effective setups and transitions.

A NEW Method of Learning That Accelerates Martial Arts Skill Development π₯
This is the MOST powerful way to learn martial arts, so keep reading to find out the SECRET! π
At Roundhouse, we believe in: Learn, Adapt, Evolve.
This mindset lets us constantly question and improve our methods.
We faced a challenge: skills werenβt emerging in practice as expected.
Skills take time to develop, especially in live sparring.
So, a coach suggested giving more sparring time to explore new skills.
The result?
Longer sparring sessions 4 (5-minute rounds) led to skills emerging later in practice.
Fatigue and extended time forced athletes to try new things.
Less instruction, more exploration = better skill development.
Athletes had fun and improved through trial and error.
A win-win in my book! π
Learn. Adapt. Evolve. πͺ

The Low Down on Skill Stacking
You donβt have to be strong or have any prior experience to learn martial arts, but you ABSOLUTELY NEED these 3 things in trainingβ¦.β¦ πͺπ₯
The idea of skill stacking is using what works in combat sports instead of one skill: striking, grappling, and ground fighting.
Do elbows and knees work? β
Does striking work? β
Does grabbing and holding somebody down work? β
Do submission and wall wrestling work? β
Yes, as a matter of fact, we would like to say whatever lands is what works! π―
So why would you want to stack skills instead of specializing in one area? π€·ββοΈ
These are always present in combat sports:
1. Striking, which is the standup game π€ΌββοΈ
2. Wrestling, which is the clinch and the takedown game π
3. Grappling, which is the offensive and defensive ground game
4. Wall Wrestling, which is the unique to MMA or fighting off the cage.
If you take a look at modern martial arts in the UFC, they no longer have just one skill set like in the past.
Combat sports athletes have evolved.
The repertoire of weapons is much more dangerous because of this evolution.
They can stand up, take you to the ground, and then beat you down. π₯π
You will see elbows, knees, grappling, and wrestling all in split decisions. βοΈπ₯
A lot and definitely looks like skill stacking to me! π―π₯

π¨ BREAKING THE SILENCE π¨: Does isolated, step-by-step technique work?
New evidence shatters this myth! π₯
Time to uncover the truth and it will blow your mind! π§ π£
Let's dive into the world of skill development, where science dispels myths and lights the path to mastery. π
Common misconception: isolated drills lead to skill development.
π« Truth: Practice that resembles the sport leads to better skill development! π
We call it βliveβ work. Athletes embracing this method see remarkable transformations. πͺ
In a dynamic "live" environment, with resistant opponents and unexpected scenarios, athletes thrive.
It's chaotic, but effective. π₯
Non-linear approach = better results.
Plus, itβs FUN and SAFE! π
Next time you train, ditch the isolated drills and step-by-step methods:
Embrace the chaos in training (couple with opponents).
Train live from start to finish (unscripted, uncooperative, opposition).
Learn by doing the sport. π₯
And that, my friends, is how you bust a myth.
Keep your mind open, your skepticism strong, and stay bold. Until next time, stay myth-free! πͺβ¨

π¨ ROUNDhouse Self-Defense Tip π¨
Did you know criminals use fear as a weapon because it makes their job easier? π±π£
Remember, they are just as afraid as you, they are afraid of getting caught. π₯π«
Never think that the bad guy is fearless, because that is the farthest from the truth. π«π¨
When you start yelling βHelp!β βGet back!β βGet Away!β or βStop!β the bad guy is in a panic and you have messed up his plan. π£οΈπ
The everyday criminal is notoriously unorganized and they turn to crime because they are too lazy to obey the law and get a job. π΅οΈββοΈπΌ
Verbalization and command presence can do a lot for a person in an altercation. πͺπ¬
One method is putting fear into the bad guy and throwing off his or her plans. β οΈπ₯
Drawing attention to the situation can also be very beneficial.

An Obsession with Skills Changes Everything
When we defined our competitive advantage of βevidence-based practice design " = skill acquisition, it became our absolute number one priority. π―
And it changed everything in the organization. π
Our teaching methodology changed. π
Our curriculum changed. ποΈ
Our coaches' training changed. π¨βπ«
Onboarding new trials and new students changed. ππ₯
Our messaging changed. π¬
Our sales process changed. πΌ
Our culture changed. π±
Change is hard. π
I've been in business for almost 20 years, and most of the systems had been honed, tested, and operating the old way. π°οΈ
So when I introduced this advantage, we had issues almost immediately. β‘
The first change was on the mat, and a lot of mistakes happened as coaches.
We had to change the culture, and what our students were used to was no longer the same.
An obsession with skills changes everything!

Keep reading to learn how we are blending the Art of Coaching and the Science of Skill at Roundhouse πͺπ―
These two ideas are the lenses we use. πβ¨
There's an ever-growing body of research that provides evidence for the science of searching for movement solutions. ππ€ΈββοΈ
But, using applied science is as much an art as it is a science. π¨π¬
We try to let the science reflect the art and the art of coaching to reflect the science. πͺπ
The reason being is because the coach is such an important part of the environment that they are intertwined, not separate. ππ€
It's a journey for the coach to pay attention, skill, stretch the athlete, evolve, practice design with the individual, but not over-plan and remain open to responsive and emergent possibilities along the way. ππ±
The secret of coaching is what you do during practice. ποΈποΈββοΈ
To combine cues, add problems, decrease, and use question-based coaching at the appropriate time. π€π‘
The art of coaching is giving a map to the athlete rather than giving them a solution. πΊοΈβ
We are building on what an athlete has, like a renovation. π οΈποΈ
With the art of coaching, we look at: are they exploring, attempting new skills, and looking for processes, not results? ππ
Skills emerge at different times and in different ways depending on the individual athlete. β³π

This might be controversial but letting a little forgetting happen after training is ACTUALLY goodβ¦.but there is something you ABSOLUTELY must do and it might surprise you. π§
π€ Bet you're familiar with this scenario: Hours of painful mat-time drilling, only to forget everything in a live round.
But fear not!
We have a game-changing solution that will revolutionize your martial arts learning experience: spaced repetition!
π§ The Power of Spaced Repetition:
β
Backed by brain science, spaced repetition optimizes memory encoding.
By repeatedly encountering skills, you improve retention and recall. I
t's the secret weapon your brain craves
π«π€ But here's the catch:
It's not as simple as mindlessly reviewing.
To truly harness the efficiency of spaced repetition, the intervals between exposures must be carefully calibrated based on your knowledge level.
This way, it perpetually challenges your weaknesses while saving time on concepts you already know.
We put spaced repetition at the core of our training to optimize and maximize skill retention.
β
With spaced repetition, you don't need endless practice sessions.
ππ― Banish Lack of Motivation:
Spaced repetition addresses the common lack of motivation.
We keep you engaged by targeting your weakest areas and constantly challenging you to improve! πͺπ₯
Experience the transformative power of spaced repetition and unlock unforgettable martial arts skills.
π Tag your fellow martial arts enthusiasts who are tired of forgetting and ready to revolutionize their learning journey with spaced repetition.
Let's unleash our full potential together! π§ πͺ

π¨ ROUNDhouse Self Defense Tipsπ¨
You wonβt see us offering birthday parties, summer camps, or picking up from schools at our training center. π
They have nothing to do self-defense or developing martial arts skills.
When it comes to self-defense we have a simple message:
Help good people become dangerous to bad peopleβ¦.
Not cake cutting ceremonies. π«π
Itβs time for the hypocrisy in the martial arts industry to stop.
Would you really feel comfortable with a professional martial arts training centers that offers birthday parties? π€
Or would you prefer a training center focuses on one thing, training, where less is better ? πͺπ§

Big Ideas Lead to Big Changes! π‘
Every business wants a competitive edge or competitive advantage. πͺ
Something that only they can offer in a way that only they can deliverπ
This advantage must be big and bold, it has to offer a new perspective and be a little risky since big ideas evoke change. π―
And since it's big, it must be difficult or impossible to do alone, which is why you need an expert to help execute it. π§
That's why we planted our flag on the martial arts skill acquisition mountain. ποΈ
It's our absolute number one priority as a training center. π₯
To claim this mountain, we had to ditch a lot of "normal" martial arts school practices. π«
Using science to guide our coaching, practice, and thinking is the next step. π§¬
We ditched methods that don't stand up to research. π
No more shallow praise and celebrations of mediocrity. π
Traditional warm-ups take a backseat to skill warm-ups. πββοΈ
No aimless reps, drills on dummies, or copy-paste patterns. π€
We focus obsessively on skill development, cutting out the fluff and white noise of ineffective martial arts training. βοΈ
Ready for big, bold ideas, innovation, and a little risk?
