Congratulations to Officer Debra Zerda of Pecan Valley STEM Academy, our August Leading the EC Way District Champion for Building Relationships! Officer Zerda was recognized for this honor at the September Board of Trustees meeting.

Every morning, Officer Zerda is at the crosswalk greeting families and welcoming Lions by name. That connection continues throughout the school day as she makes herself accessible to students, staff and families and works to ensure they feel safe, supported and heard.

Officer Zerda finds meaningful ways to connect with students, from helping them set behavior goals and celebrating their progress to building relationships through something as simple as a game of basketball.

Congratulations, Officer Zerda, and thank you for turning everyday interactions into meaningful connections and Leading the EC Way!

As Childhood Cancer & Leukemia Awareness Month comes to a close, we’re honored to share the story of one of our own. 💛

East Central High School junior Yasmin Almanza was diagnosed with leukemia in February 2025. Her treatment caused her to miss part of her freshman year and much of her sophomore year, but her education remained important to her throughout it all.

With the support of homebound services, Yasmin continued completing her schoolwork even during some of her most difficult days. This year, she has been able to return to campus for her junior year.

Yasmin’s mom describes her as smart, determined and a fighter, and we couldn’t agree more. We’re proud to have you back, Yasmin, and we’re cheering you on every step of the way. Thank you to Yasmin and her family for allowing us to share her story and help raise awareness for childhood cancer and leukemia.

Congratulations to Betty Vasquez, Heritage Middle School’s August Leading the EC Way honoree for Building Relationships!

As a Safety Resource Officer, Betty plays an important role in keeping Heritage safe and secure, but her impact extends far beyond safety procedures. Her daily presence on campus has allowed her to build genuine trust with students, who know they can turn to her for support and guidance.

Whether she is listening to a student’s concerns, helping resolve a conflict or simply recognizing a need and stepping in to help, Betty combines safety with genuine care for the people she serves.

Thank you, Betty, for creating a campus where students feel safe, supported and connected while Leading the EC Way!

Congratulations to Natalie Medellin, CAST Lead High School’s August Leading the EC Way honoree for Building Relationships!

Natalie understands that meaningful relationships begin with meeting students where they are. Through patience, persistence and trust, she creates an environment where students feel safe stepping beyond their comfort zones, finding their voices and discovering what they are capable of achieving.

Though new to education, Natalie has already made a meaningful impact at CAST Lead through her genuine care for students and belief in their potential. She celebrates progress, encourages students through challenges and gives wholeheartedly without seeking recognition in return.

Thank you, Natalie, for believing in students and Leading the EC Way!
