A K3-8th Grade School at Interstate 10 and West Avenue that can be summed up in 5 words: Catholic | College Prep | Heaven Prep We aim to foster responsible Christian behavior, reflection and prayer, mastery of basic skills, critical thinking and informed decision making.

We hope to equip students with the necessary skills to become integrated persons who are happy and positive in their response to the challenges of an ever-changing, multicultural society where they will be active participants in a technologically complex world of interdependence. We aim to provide quality education for our students and to implement, within a loving faith community, the three-fold plan of Christian (Catholic) education: to teach Christian doctrine, to build community, and to serve others. We recognize that parents are the primary educators of their children; therefore, we expect and encourage parent interest and involvement in all activities concerning the growth and development of their children. St. Mary Magdalen School is totally committed to its education ministry in the guidance and direction of the learner as a Christian person and as a member of the community in which he/she lives and interacts. Through the cooperative and collaborative effort of administration, faculty, and students, developmental goals and instructional objectives are accomplished. The continuous and dynamic formation through instruction and discipline provides the learner with necessary skills and experiences so that he/she/may realize the ultimate goals of Catholic education, therefore becoming a responsible adult who can meet the challenges of the future and the demands of society.

Year of St. Joseph 2021 – St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church

We wanted to share this awesome opportunity our Parish is offering and just in time for lent! No greater way to learn more of Christ and draw nearer to Him than through St. Joseph!

Below are more details and the link to join in the 33day Consecration to St. Joseph
______________

Pope Francis has recently declared this year as a Year of St. Joseph. This is a beautiful opportunity to learn and grow in imitation of St. Joseph – Husband, Parent, and Disciple. He is a man of no words in Sacred Scripture, but he is a man of action. Those actions give us a brilliant model to follow and inspire us to live a holy life.

St. Joseph was a man of true virtue and true devotion to God. He was like his ancestor, King David, a man after God’s own heart. He was chosen by God the Father to not just be “protector” and “provider” but to share intimately and shape deeply the lives of Jesus and Mary. St. Joseph is the man God chose to love, support, and treat with great dignity the Virgin Mary. Through his example Jesus learns to see, believe in, and restore the great dignity of all women. St. Joseph was chosen to image fatherhood to Jesus on behalf of God the Father. He taught Jesus, on a human level, many important practices. He taught Jesus how to speak and say Abba — Daddy! He taught Jesus how to walk. He taught Jesus the value of human labor as a carpenter. Saint Joseph even taught Jesus how to pray! Take the words of the Psalms, such as “The Lord is my Shepherd, there is nothing I shall want…” (Psalm 23:1), Saint Joseph prayed these words and taught the Child Jesus to pray them. The great Saint Joseph taught the Living Word of God how to pray using human words!

Saint Joseph was always, always, available to the needs of his family — both wife and Son! Saint Joseph prayed with the family, worked with the family, ate with the family, went to the Synagogue and Temple with the family, laughed with the family, relaxed with the family, and finally died in the arms of those he loved most — Jesus and Mary!

33 Day Consecration to St. Joseph

As part of the Year of St. Joseph, promulgated by Pope Francis, our parish will be offering an opportunity to consecrate ourselves to this faithful saint. Consecration means that you are asking St. Joseph to be your spiritual father and that you want him to help you to acquire his virtues and become holy. St. Joseph will give those consecrated to him his attention, protection, and guidance.

Our parish-wide 33-day preparation for Consecration begins Sunday, February 14th and ends on Friday, March 19th, the Solemnity of St. Joseph with a special mass in the church. You may also begin the consecration at any other time and repeat it throughout the year.

33 Day Consecration to St. Joseph booklets are available in the church and office or you can download a copy here.

Top Ten Reasons to Choose St. Mary Magdalen School

1. Experienced, Educated Teachers & Individual Attention
• More years (200+) of teaching experience on staff than students enrolled
• Over a dozen University degrees, and over 10 Masters and Doctoral degrees
• A classroom student-teacher ratio under 15:1

2. A Cost-Effective Catholic Education
• No Catholic school in San Antonio is more affordable
• Most students receive financial assistance
• Tuition for full day (7 a.m. to 6 p.m.) K3 and K4 is more affordable than many daycares

3. A College Prep Experience: Graduate Support Program
• Our Graduate Support Program prepares our students for the high school and college experience by offering help with the admissions process, academics, culture and more.
• Most schools aim to prepare students for the next stage, but SMMS uniquely remains as a support system all the way through college.

4. Education for the Body: Athletics
• A middle school (AIAL) and an elementary (CAL) sports program
• Students in grades K4 to 8th grade can participate in football, soccer, volleyball, basketball, softball, baseball, cross-country, track, tennis, cheer and more.

5. Education Beyond The Routine: After School Clubs Program
• Opportunities for students to engage in non-traditional activities through clubs that meet after school, like Chess, Sewing, Yearbook, Film, Spanish, Rosary, Lego, Zoology, Poetry, Electronics, Dance, and more.

6. A Built-In, Professional Support System: Counseling
• A counselor on staff who can attend to students through individual interaction as well as class-level team building and education on bullying, internet safety and more.

7. A Dynamic, Active, Charismatic Parish
• A community of priests, the Brothers of the Beloved Disciple, live and work on the parish/school grounds.

8. Our Core Values
• Uniquely rooted in Catholic Social Teaching, we emphasize dignity and resilience. We also stress a growth mindset, where effort, not talent, is encouraged and nurtured. In a nutshell, effort = success. Intelligence is not fixed, it can increase with hard work, particularly through reading. Reading is to the brain as exercise is to the body.

9. An Awesome Patroness
• Mary Magdalen personifies what being a Maverick is all about: a brave, independent spirit. She’s the First Witness of the Resurrection!

10. Tradition
• For over 70 years, SMMS has been a bulwark for Catholic education in San Antonio.
