I have NEWS! 📰

I’m so proud and excited to be a contributing writer for Live From The Southside! Each month, I’ll be sharing news and insights related to local education issues 🏫, family wellbeing initiatives 🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒, and civic engagements 🗳️.

This month, I’m talking about public school accountability ratings 💯 and why we should leverage them when expanding what works and re-evaluating what doesn’t.

Our children are worth more than a grade on a single test, and our teachers and schools should be measured by more than just students’ test scores. However, schools must also still be held accountable to ensuring students, especially those from underserved communities, are learning the fundamental literacy and numeracy skills they need to be successful in life.

We can do both: We can reform the accountability system so that it is more fair and accurate AND we can demand an accountability system that proves what is possible and holds the bar high for our kids.

What do you think? 🤔 Let’s talk about it! 🗣

Are you (or someone you know) age 60 or older? 🧓 Did you know San Antonio has dedicated senior centers that offer FREE meals, entertainment, recreation, education, and more?

Here's what I learned at the City of San Antonio Department of Human Services Commission on Strengthening Family Well-Being 🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒 August 2026 Meeting:

1. Every City Council District has at least 1 comprehensive senior center that offers FREE meals 🍽️ and services that include entertainment (such as dances 🪩 and social events), recreation (like Bingo nights and chair volleyball 🏐), education (like financial literacy classes 🤑 and art 🖼️ and music 🎶 lessons), and much, much more!

2. The only requirements for accessing these services? Be 60 years old or older (or married to someone who is), be independent (or accompanied by a caregiver), and live within Bexar County.

3. PLUS: All comprehensive senior centers offer transportation within a 5-mile radius! 🚌

Locate and contact your nearest senior center and start taking advantage of these incredible, FREE community resources today!

You can also check out what else is available to seniors here: https://www.sa.gov/Directory/Departments/DHS/Senior-Services

If you're a City Council District 3 resident, be sure to check out the South Side Lions Senior Center located at 📍 3303 Pecan Valley Dr. You can also call them at 📞 210-207-1760.

ICYMI: Zaria Oates - KSAT reported on the FREE student bus pass initiative! Thanks to a partnership between Councilwoman Marina Alderete Gavito, San Antonio City Council District 7 and VIA Metropolitan Transit, students ages 12-18 can get a free bus pass for this entire school year.

I’m always so impressed by the caring adults and resilient students at Triumph Public High Schools San Antonio, and in this featured segment they demonstrate how transportation access can lead to success.

I love that my job involves amplifying stories and championing initiatives such as these!

In honor of National Latina Day, I spent the day with new and old LLI sisters sharing my experience as the Phyllis Viagran City Councilwoman District 3 appointee to the Commission on Strengthening Family and Community Well-Being, a member of the San Antonio ISD Blue Ribbon Task Force, and a former candidate for ECISD School Board Trustee.

Underneath those titles is just an incredibly passionate (and relentless) Latina, teacher, and mamá who cares deeply about investing in our children’s futures and bringing opportunities to the Southside.

I am proud and grateful to be Latina. I am even more proud and grateful for my Latina community, and all that we are doing to make the world a better place! ❤️🧡

I didn’t want to run this morning. I woke up tired, legs sore, and absolutely unmotivated.

But, somehow, I did it anyway.

I put on my running clothes and sneakers, filled up my water pack, put on sunscreen and bug spray, and drove to the trail.

I forced myself to focus on one task at a time, and I told myself I could decide if I wanted to run after completing the next step. This kept me going through the motions until I reached the trailhead.

Then, I started running and the complaints quickly followed: “my legs hurt” “my stomach hurts” “it’s too hot to be running” “I’m not cut out for this” “signing up for a half-marathon was a mistake”

As soon as I recognized the pattern of negative thoughts, I switched gears. I spoke aloud: “Sayda, you CAN do this” “You have the power of your ancestors flowing through you.” “You’re not alone. Somewhere there’s a mama like you who’s running and wants to give up but she’s not going to and neither are you!!”

In the end, I ran the slowest 3 miles I’ve run in a long time, but you know what? I did it. And you can too.

Whatever you’re facing, whatever you’re enduring, you can and will make it through. Just take things one step at a time. Slow it down if you have to. Just don’t give up!

We are not our hardest days. We are how we get through them.

Pinch me, I must be dreaming! Nope, I was in fact back at Whitman College for the Whitman Alumni Volunteer Experience (WAVE) with alumni volunteers going all the way back to the Class of 1969 and with me, the youngest one, representing the Class of 2015.

I talked sociology and education over drinks with my former thesis advisor Sociology Professor Michelle Janning 🤓 and walked from campus to The Green, iykyk.

I owe a lot of who I am today to my Whitman experience. And yet, just like when I was a student, I believe that Whitman still has real work to do in how it serves first-gen, working-class students of color, both while we're on campus and long after we leave.

That's why I am proud and excited to serve specifically on the Whitman Alumni of Color Coalition. We're a group of graduates who are showing up for each other, not just for the institution. We are folks who want to build real community, not just sit and reminisce.

Our first task as a coalition is repair: rebuilding relationships with each other, including alumni who've felt disconnected from Whitman or from other alumni, so that we can support one another moving forward.

I can't wait to share what we build this year. If you're a Whittie of color, DM me! We want you with us.
