Congratulations to Laurence Maeyens on being selected as a recipient of the Jess Hay Chancellor’s Fellowship.

Laurence is second-year PhD student in the IBMS Program – Biology of Aging Discipline and is co-mentored by Dr. James Nelson and Dr. Shangang Zhao. His research explores the mechanisms behind dietary restriction, s*x differences in lifespan, and the role of dietary fatty acids in aging. In his letter to the UT System Chancellor, Dr. David Weiss shared that Laurence's work is especially impactful, not only for the health of Texans, but globally, given the growing burden of age-related disease and the urgent need to identify interventions that extend health span.

Laurence will receive $15,000 to put toward his biomedical research endeavors.

Today marks Dean Weiss’ final day as Dean of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, closing an extraordinary chapter in his remarkable career.

For nearly 16 years, Dr. Weiss’ leadership, compassion, and dedication have shaped the lives of students, faculty, staff, and alumni across the UT San Antonio Health Science Center campus.

As he begins this well-deserved retirement, we thank Dr. Weiss for his unwavering commitment, mentorship, and lasting legacy. We wish him and his wife, Rosemary, happiness and exciting new adventures in this next chapter.

Fueled by purpose and inspired by personal experience, Francine Nihozeko-Haswell, PhD Student in the Integrated Biomedical Sciences Program - Cancer Biology Discipline, is pursuing research that could one day change patients’ lives.

In this graduation spotlight, Francine shares how losing loved ones to cancer inspired her to become a part of the search for better therapies. Through hands-on lab experience, she discovered not only a passion for research, but also the confidence to pursue a PhD and make a meaningful impact in healthcare.

Throughout her journey, the support of her husband and mentor, Dr. Feng Chen Yang, helped her navigate the challenges of graduate school and continue pushing forward.

As she looks ahead, Francine hopes to continue working in scientific consulting and further develop as an independent scientist.
