Today the Makerspace would like to recognize one of our outstanding students participating in the 2025-2026 drone certification cohort: STEM ECHS senior, Ava Medel.

Ava is a recent 2026 STEM Early College graduate who graduated top 10% of her class. She will begin her bachelors program at Texas A&M San Antonio this coming fall majoring in computer science with a minor in business. With her drone certification and drone pilot license, she plans to pursue aerial drone photography for real estate and land surveying in the near future.

We are proud of you, Ava!

After more than a year of planning, design, development, and collaboration, the Jewel Wietzel Center Makerspace was proud to host a soft opening for the new San Antonio Water System HydroCore immersive experience.

The project began with an initial visit and evolved through numerous planning sessions, concept discussions, story development meetings, design sketches, and construction phases. Spearheaded by Greg Wukasch, External Affairs Manger for SAWS, countless trips by their carpenters, painters, and electricians, as well as the continued support of SAWS leadership, Hydrocore is now operational and prepped for a summer of piloting their exciting hands-on program through our summer camps in anticipation of a full rollout next school year.

Yesterday’s soft opening provided students, known as AquaScouts, and their families with an opportunity to engage with the completed environment and explore the interactive learning activities designed to promote water conservation, infrastructure awareness, and STEM education. The AquaScouts’ visit to the JWC Makerspace was a capstone finish to SAWS’ weeklong summer camp held at their headquarters.

HydroCore represents another significant collaborative achievement between an industry partner and the JWCMS, demonstrating the impact of securing long-term partnerships, creative problem-solving, and cultivating meaningful hands-on learning experiences for students.

SAWS HydroCore is no longer just an idea…it’s a reality!

Thank you, Greg and ❤️
