Her is so inspiring 🤩 To hear about how she advocated for racial equity to how she invented color changing stitches, and all the risks she took in between. I really loved how she encouraged all the young people as they pursue STEM and how she stressed how important family members, teachers & mentors are in supporting students in their STEM journeys - to connect them to a broader network of experts, to encourage them to continue to take risks, & to help them push through the challenges along the way. Go Dasia!

Updates and some great news: On the final day of legislative session, a few nasty bills failed to come up for a vote or even flat-out failed. Specifically, SB 233, the private school voucher bill that would divert public funds from schools serving majority Black and impoverished students, failed. However, a vote to reconsider next year passed, so the fight to fund our public schools is not over.
A huge thank you to organizations like Georgia Youth Justice Coalition and IDRA, who worked tirelessly and spoke with countless legislators on both sides to defeat the bill this year. Y'all never cease to amaze us.

The Valued Youth Partnership, created by the Intercultural Development Research Association, is an internationally-recognized, cross-age tutoring program with an unusual twist. This dropout prevention program works by identifying junior high and high school students in at-risk situations and enlisting them as tutors for elementary school youngsters who are also struggling in school. Given this role of personal and academic responsibility, the Valued Youth tutors learn self-discipline and develop self-esteem. Schools shift to the philosophy and practices of valuing students considered at-risk.

Thanks to the advocacy of IDRA, our partners and individual advocates, a bill to ban corporal punishment made it to the House floor. But this week, by a vote of 58-86, the House neglected to protect children in school.

School districts in Texas do not have to wait for the legislature.
They can elect to end the practice of corporal punishment in their own schools.

The Valued Youth Partnership, created by the Intercultural Development Research Association, is an internationally-recognized, cross-age tutoring program with an unusual twist. This dropout prevention program works by identifying junior high and high school students in at-risk situations and enlisting them as tutors for elementary school youngsters who are also struggling in school. Given this role of personal and academic responsibility, the Valued Youth tutors learn self-discipline and develop self-esteem. Schools shift to the philosophy and practices of valuing students considered at-risk.
