I loved listening to Captain Barrington Irving at the STEM Learning Ecosystems convening! He shared how influential his teacher & mentor were to get him interested in aviation. Interesting quote- "Students need to know more about the destination than the journey. Learn more at Flying Classroom 🤩 I appreciate how he challenged us educators in the room to reach and teach students differently.

at the STEM Learning Ecosystems Convening this morning! Her is so inspiring 🤩 To hear about how she advocated for racial equity to how she invented color changing stitches, and all the risks she took in between. I really loved how she encouraged all the young people as they pursue STEM and how she stressed how important family members, teachers & mentors are in supporting students in their STEM journeys - to connect them to a broader network of experts, to encourage them to continue to take risks, & to help them push through the challenges along the way. Go Dasia!

DYK: This year, the Intercultural Development Research Association (IDRA) is celebrating 𝟓𝟎 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 since its founding!🎉

IDRA's mission has remained the same since its beginning in 1973. Their mission strives to achieve equal educational opportunity for every child through strong public schools which prepare all students to succeed in college.

IDRA has been a national leader in educational equity by implementing change in the classrooms and finding solutions to uplift students academic experience.

So many educators, administrative staff, families, community leaders, policymakers, and most importantly students, have been positively impacted by IDRA. As IDRA believes, "every child is valuable and must count in the school system."

Thank you for what you do IDRA 👏👏👏

🚨NEW: We alongside our over 30 member organizations oppose HB 4340 today and all attempts to divert public dollars from public schools.

IDRA Policy Fellow Diana Long gives us the truth about what these voucher schemes are up to.

🚨NEW: Over 35+ organizations have signed onto testimony against SB17, a bill to ban DEI initiatives on college campuses in TX.

We stand firmly against these attacks & support college environments where first-gen, & marginalized, students can feel valued and respected.

Updates and some great news: On the final day of legislative session, a few nasty bills failed to come up for a vote or even flat-out failed. Specifically, SB 233, the private school voucher bill that would divert public funds from schools serving majority Black and impoverished students, failed. However, a vote to reconsider next year passed, so the fight to fund our public schools is not over.
A huge thank you to organizations like Georgia Youth Justice Coalition and IDRA, who worked tirelessly and spoke with countless legislators on both sides to defeat the bill this year. Y'all never cease to amaze us.
Swipe to see a few other bills that happily did not pass. Legislative session may be over, but Progress Georgia will still update you on everything you need to know year-round!

The Valued Youth Partnership, created by the Intercultural Development Research Association, is an internationally-recognized, cross-age tutoring program with an unusual twist. This dropout prevention program works by identifying junior high and high school students in at-risk situations and enlisting them as tutors for elementary school youngsters who are also struggling in school. Given this role of personal and academic responsibility, the Valued Youth tutors learn self-discipline and develop self-esteem. Schools shift to the philosophy and practices of valuing students considered at-risk.
