Iโ€™m a James Madison FFA Alumna, Class of 2019. I am now a student at Texas A&M University, Class of 2023, majoring in Agricultural Communications & Journalism and minoring in Poultry Science. As an FFA member I raised breeding gilts, competed in Agricultural Issues, Agricultural Communications, Poultry Judging, Marketing Plan, Job Interview, Ag Advocacy, Agriscience Fair, and Public Speaking. I also served as the Chapter President during my senior year. At Texas A&M, I am a member of Sigma Alpha, which is an agricultural sorority where we can share our passion for the industry and grow as leaders. When I graduate, I plan to continue to serve the agricultural industry in anyway I can!

Welcome Ms. Molitor and Mr. Witzel!

The AMP is fortunate to add the powerhouse talent of Ms. April Molitor and Mr. Mackenzie Witzel to our all-star team of AMP faculty and staff.

Ms. Molitor grew up outside of Hondo, TX, on an exotic game ranch where she gained a rich passion for all things animal and environmental related. Her agriculture experiences and time in the local 4-H club naturally led her to join the Hondo FFA program upon entering high school. The leadership development event she was most involved in was farm skills, where her team diligently talked about building an electric fence. Her true passion, however, was career development events. Right off the bat, Ms. Molitor was drawn to the Meat Judging team. She contributes this interest to her previous experience with at-home processing. In addition to Meat Judging, Ms. Molitor participated in Wool, Livestock, Range and Land Judging. She also raised swine projects from 3rd grade through her senior year of high school and placed two market barrows at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo as a highlight of her show career. Now after several years in college, she is excited to be back in the show barn giving back to students raising and exhibiting swine.

After high school, Ms. Molitor attended Texas Tech University, where she majored in Animal Science with an emphasis in Meat Science. In her first semester, she was a student worker for the Meat Science Department where she learned many valuable skills about how the department works. Throughout her time at Texas Tech, she was heavily involved in Collegiate Judging, including Wool, Meat, Meat Animal Evaluation, Meat Science Quiz bowl, and Animal Science Academic Quadrathlon. Ms. Molitor also got the opportunity to work in undergraduate research (both domestically and internationally), coach high school students and peers in meat judging and guest instruct the freshman meat science class. It is her belief that red meat is fundamental to the health of an individual and the study of the meat industry offers endless career opportunities.

In August of 2019, Ms. Molitor relocated to Manhattan, Kansas to pursue a masterโ€™s degree in Food Science. During graduate school, she studied other food commodities which helped to round out her understanding of food science and safety.

Mr. Mackenzie Witzel grew up on a family farm in Burlington, Colorado and was greatly involved in 4-H and FFA throughout his entire school life. He had extensive experience raising and exhibiting cattle, swine, and lambs. He was also very successful competing in Livestock Judging and Public Speaking FFA while a Colorado FFA member. His love for the FFA ultimately led Mr. Witzel to being elected as the Colorado FFA State President. competing in livestock judging and public speaking, and eventually serving as the Colorado FFA State President.

After serving a year as the Colorado FFA State President, Mr. Witzel attended Kansas State University and earned a bachelorโ€™s degree in Agricultural Education. Upon graduation, he was an agriculture science teacher and FFA advisor in both Oklahoma and Kansas. After two years of teaching, Mr. Witzel took a position with the Kansas Department of Agriculture as a meat and poultry inspector.

In 2019, Mr. Witzel relocated to San Antonio and stepped back into the classroom with North East ISD. With the opportunity that became available at AMP this summer to join the staff, he is excited to be back in his area of passion teaching agriculture and training/coaching students in FFA competitive events.

Separating sheep from goats: AMP students get a head start on upcoming school year 07/28/2021

Separating sheep from goats: AMP students get a head start on upcoming school year

The start of school is still about a month away, but there is already a buzz at Madison High Schoolโ€™s Agriscience Magnet Program (AMP).

Thereโ€™s also a lot of mooing and bleating.

Thatโ€™s because the animals have already arrived at many of the barns on campus.

There are dozens of sheep, goats, pigs and steers in their respective barns. And students are already showing up daily to put in the work needed to care for the animals.

Senior Hailey Hunt is taking care of a lamb named Driver.

Sheโ€™s been part of the Future Farmers of America (FFA) since seventh grade.

โ€œI wish I could have done this when I was little,โ€ said Hunt. โ€œItโ€™s just a very family-oriented organization. I have learned a lot.โ€

Hailey and nearly 100 other students swing by the barns in the morning and tend to their animals in the evening.

Hailey takes Driver on walks. She feeds him. Sheโ€™s also responsible for cleaning out Driverโ€™s pen. Hailey and Driver also like to play chase with a bright pink and green volleyball.

Itโ€™s a lot of work, but Hailey understands what it takes to succeed in this program.

โ€œWeโ€™ve got to start early and make sure these lambs are show ready,โ€ said Hunt. โ€œYou donโ€™t want to buy a lamb in August and have a really green lamb. You have to start early, so you have a well-rounded lamb. Something the judges are looking for.โ€

Lamb barn instructor Mac Wetzel and Goat barn instructor Cheree Leita are also on campus over the summer to help guide Hailey and the others.

But their animal expertise isnโ€™t all they are offering these students.

โ€œI definitely wouldnโ€™t be the person I am here today without them,โ€ said Hunt. โ€œThey have built me up and pushed me outside my comfort zones so that I can strive in the FFA world.โ€

Hailey has tried a couple of different pathways in AMP and agribusiness is where she has found her passion. She hopes to attend Texas A&M after graduation and appreciates the head-start she has already gained by being in AMP.
