A tooth may look like a solid piece of bone—but inside it is a living structure with nerves, blood vessels, and a suspension system that absorbs every bite. 🦷

Enamel forms the hard outer covering of the crown and is the most highly mineralized tissue in the body. Beneath it lies dentin, which makes up most of the tooth and contains microscopic tubules that help explain why exposed dentin can become sensitive. Unlike many tissues, mature enamel cannot regenerate itself once significantly lost.

At the center is the dental pulp, a living connective tissue containing nerves and blood vessels. When decay progresses through enamel and dentin into the pulp, inflammation can cause severe toothache and may eventually lead to infection—one reason early cavities are much easier to treat than deep ones. 🔥

The root is supported by more than bone. Cementum covers the root, while the periodontal ligament connects it to the surrounding alveolar bone and helps absorb forces during chewing. At the root tip, the apical foramen provides a pathway for nerves and blood vessels to enter the pulp.
